The position is the Laundry Worker located in the Textile Care Section of Environmental Management (EMS) at the Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS).


Responsibilities

NOTE: This position is covered by AFGE bargaining unit. Per the AFGE Master Agreement, the Area of Consideration will be: 1st Area of Consideration - current permanent employees of The Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS) located in Biloxi, MS and its CBOC employees, CTAP eligibles; 2nd Area of Consideration - Department of Veteran Affairs current permanent employees.

Duties include but not limited to:
  • Cross-trained in all techniques and procedures used within the TCPF in the event of staffing shortages or unforeseen workload and works under strict time frames and deadlines due to patient workload.
  • Selects the correct linen to be dried to ensure linen flow on the production floor is continuous.
  • Responsible for correct operations of the dryers, small washer, pneumatic lift system, garment finisher and timely delivery of finished textiles when required.
  • Display sound judgement in monitoring the work flow for textile processing tasks through communication with the linen clerk, laundry work leaders and laundry supervisors, to determine and communicate linen needs to the washman in a timely manner.
  • Serves as an operator, Laundry Worker.
  • Understands Infection Control measures are to be maintained between soiled side operations and clean textiles, and uses proper aseptic techniques including proper hand hygiene.
  • Works in a safe manner, adhering to established safety policies and reporting any hazardous or potential hazardous conditions to management.
  • Ensures continuous and safe operations; incumbent will follow all infection control, OSHA requirements and Joint commission guidelines when staging washed carts, loading and unloading washer/ extractors, small washers, dryers, and garment finisher.
  • Safeguards textile equipment, materials and supplies for his/her assigned area.
  • Understands various chemical agents used by the TCPF to ensure they are properly used to prevent damage to linens, uniforms and any other textiles processed.
  • Responds to changing linen requirements, as necessary.
  • Assists with the test piece program by delivering the test piece to the washman after each load processed.
  • Inspectors and packages for all Operating and Sterile Procedure linens.

Work Schedule: Full-Time, Shift Work, 7:00AM - 3:30 PM or 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM, tour to be determined by supervisor based on organizational needs

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Most tasks require varying degrees of muscular effort and hand-to-eye coordination to assure safe and efficient use of equipment and supplies. Work requires frequent bending or stooping, prolonged walking, and standing. Frequently lifts laundry items weighing up to 25 lbs. and occasionally items weighing over 30 lbs. Work requires visual acuity to assure completion of tasks in acceptably clean and aseptic manner. Incumbent generally works in a well-ventilated, air conditioned, and well lighted area. He/she follows predetermined work procedures but must determine independently when a job is done well. Incumbent is constantly exposed to potential contamination and unclean surroundings and must be able to understand and follow procedures. The work environment demands the ability to focus. Must be able to work independently and under stressful conditions. Education
