The Lab Assistant prepares the samples for laboratory analysis and perform testing in the clinical lab setting of tests in the moderate complexity category when directly supervised. Maintain records of patient results, chart reports, take telephone calls and relaying messages accurately, and general cleaning of the laboratory and equipment may also be part of the Lab Assistant’s job description.


Laboratory Assistant Responsibilities

  • Must conduct him/herself professionally at all times, show tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality with patients. Cooperation with supervisors and co-workers is mandatory.
  • The Lab Assistant must be familiar with all areas of the phlebotomist’s job description.
  • The Lab Assistant must be aware of guidelines for specimen collection, handling, processing, and any allowable reporting.
  • All approved testing will be reviewed by a technician or technologist prior to approval in Lab information system.
  • The technician will be required to show proficiency in all testing areas assigned by participating in laboratory wide Proficiency Programs and internal blind sampling.
  • The Lab Assistant is responsible for the collection of blood specimens in accordance with acceptable phlebotomy techniques. This includes venipunctures, micro-collection techniques, bleeding times and therapeutic phlebotomies. Adherence to all directives from CLIA regarding sampling, labeling, and handling of the specimen is required. The confidence of the patient is always to be of paramount importance.
  • Personal protective equipment is to be used, appropriate to the task being performed. All safety measures outlined in laboratory safety manual are to be followed without fail.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail is required, as well as speed in preparing specimens. Mislabeling or mixing up specimens will not be tolerated and will result in remedial action. Checking two patient identifiers before drawing blood or obtaining a urine sample is mandatory.
  • Assay patient samples through automated cell counter.
  • Set up Sed Rate samples, read results.
  • Prepare differential slides for review by technician or technologist.
  • Sample placement on automated coagulation analyzer.
  • Chemical dipstick analysis of urine samples. • Preparation of microscopic portion of sample for review by technician or technologist.
  • Setting primary culture media from acceptable specimens for bacteriological exams.
  • Preparing slides for gram stains.
  • Evaluating CLOTEST specimens from surgery.
  • Performing any serological procedure deemed moderate complexity, or waived status.
  • Any sample placement on automated chemistry analyzers deemed moderate complexity.
  • Run any patient sample on point of care analyzers.
  • High school diploma is required
  • The Lab Assistant should be willing to undertake additional tasks within the scope of his/her abilities, as required by supervisors and technologists.
  • A laboratory assistant will not be allowed to perform any Immunohematology/Blood Bank procedures, except obtaining a patient sample in accordance with policy for identifying samples suitable for blood bank testing.
