Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in the installation and maintenance of signs, herbicide applications and roadway inspections along roads and bridges on the state highway system throughout the district. Acts as Crew Leader on the district-wide Engineering Directive 8 and 12-year Sign Replacement operations maintenance crew. Serves as crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as the installation of new signs and straightening of existing signs according to state specifications; placement of thermoplastic pavement markings such as stop bars, arrows, crosswalks, and railroad crossings according to state specifications. Inspects roads for missing and damaged signs, sign reflectivity, leaning and/or obstructed signs and other safety hazards. Operates both truck mounted, backpack and handheld herbicide spraying equipment to control undesirable vegetation around sign and delineator installations, sidewalks, fences, guardrail, culvert ends and bridge slopes within maintained right of way limits throughout the district. Instructs crew members daily in safety practices. Practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or when working with hazardous material and waste. Set up traffic control according to SCMUTCD Standards to warn motorist of road work ahead. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as HMMS and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Calibrates equipment and maintains spray equipment for both truck and hand sprayers. Maintains calibration records and chronicles as required. Maintains an up-to-date inventory of herbicides for assigned treatment areas. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailers for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Operates both portable tank mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Performs other duties as requested or assigned by supervisor including after hour work, inclement weather operations, and assisting on-call personnel. Performs other duties as assigned.
Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. Must also obtain a tanker endorsement on your CDL within six months of placement within position. Must also obtain a South Carolina Pesticide Applicator License certified in Right-of-Way Category 6 within six months of placement within position.
