Summary:
The Kalamazoo Nature Center Camp aims to provide safe experiences that allow all children to grow into active and respectful community members through exploration of the natural world. KNC will provide full day in person mentorship, learning support, and outdoor activities for students participating in virtual classrooms through our Virtual Learning Hub. The Health Officer will manage all health related communication, documentation, and address all medical and health related needs for students and staff while in attendance at programming. This means taking care of minor injuries, being the first responder to major injuries and making judgement calls with regards to next steps toward treatment, administering OTC and prescribed medications to students who need them, and other tasks. The Health Officer is available as needed by students and staff at any time while programming is in session. Also, able to implement and follow safety procedures as they relate to COVID-19. The Health Officer will provide support to Educators as needed. Seeking an individual who is organized, responsible, and self-motivated. An individual who enjoys being outside and working with children. The Health Officer will be supervised by and report to the Camp Director.
What we ask of our Health Officer:
- Assist with check-in/registration, communicating with families about any health needs/concerns for students.
- Conduct health screens at pick up and drop off and on an as needed basis.
- “Float” between the two groups to provide additional support to educators as needed especially as related to health.
- Respond to students and educators needs, especially medical concerns
- Provide quality health care.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and professional medical records of all health care provided to campers and staff.
- Clean/sanitize materials and frequently used items and surfaces in your groups program areas throughout the day; including bathrooms and shared materials (between each use).
- Review all incident reports for accuracy and completion turned in by staff and follow up with staff as necessary to ensure proper documentation on all reports.
- Maintain the confidentiality of students and staff relating to issues such as health, behavior, and other situations that may arise.
- Maintain organized medical records and turn in reviewed incident reports to the Camp Director at the end of the day.
- Deliver OTC medications to students and staff members as needed.
- Report any medication errors, accidents or incidents to the Camp Director immediately.
- Review student medical records as part of the pre-screening process.
- Respond appropriately and maintain composure in potentially stressful situations.
- Assist in VLH emergencies or other situations as directed by supervisors.

What we ask of all KNC VL Staff:

- Responsible for the care of VLs program equipment and facilities;
- Attend pre-hub training and in-service trainings during the school year.
- Be versed in and demonstrate KNC’s policy and customer standards at all times.
- Maintain a flexible work schedule.
- Monitor students for symptoms of illness and respond appropriately throughout the duration of the school year.
- Self-monitor for symptoms of illness for the 14 days prior to programming and throughout the duration of the school year.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
- Current certification Wilderness first responder, American Red Cross community first aid and CPR for the professional rescuer, American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider or equivalent or
- Current license to practice in Michigan as a Physician, Physician’s Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse, Practical Nurse, Emergency Medical Technician, Medical First Responder, or National Outdoor Leadership School Wilderness First Responder Certification, or American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies Certification.
- Ability to read and write to originate, update and monitor health care records and to implement the treatment guidelines and health service policies.
- Experience working with diverse populations;
- Must be able to work 40 hours each week of programming.
- Willingness to work with a set schedule and remain flexible with the changing times related to Executive Orders.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, guardians and parents.
- Must be able to negotiate hilly terrain, rustic trails, and walk 2-5 miles per day, with comfort and possess the stamina to carry out programs outdoors in varying weather conditions, including both very hot and very cold temperatures presented in our beautiful Michigan climate over an extended period of time.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, guardians and parents.
- Must possess visual, auditory, cognitive ability to effectively care for and triage students and staff illness and injuries.
- Must have a commitment to uphold a strong environmental ethic.
- Must possess the ability to communicate and work with groups of all ages and skill levels in order to provide necessary instruction to students.
- Must have a strong work ethic and be able to commit to all of the school year.
- Must complete a background check.
- A valid driver’s license and good driving record are preferred and applicants must be able to commit to the entire VLH schedule or at least half.

COVID-19 considerations:
Staff are required to wear mask indoors and outdoors (when 6 ft can't be maintained). Extra cleaning and sanitizing will also be done. Staff and students are required to go through a health screening daily in order to attend programming.
