POSITION SUMMARY:
The Health Information Technician is responsible for the maintenance, storage and processing of all medical records and EHR data. This involves performing a variety of clerical and technical duties associated with the management and oversight of Chapa-De Indian Health’s medical records including, but not limited to: electronic assembly, analysis, release of information, data processing, collection, reconciliation and preparation of reports in a manner consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal and regulatory requirements of a health care system. Must be able to work independently and have the ability to interact and communicate both verbally and in writing with clients, family members, the public and physicians and staff.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Gathers and processes patient health records as needed for patient appointments, pharmacy, phone calls and other department needs.
2. Reviews records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with policies to ensure adherence to standards or regulations.
3. Ensures patient health records are retrieved for providers and departments in a timely manner as needed for patient care, auditing and other purposes.
4. Answers incoming calls in a timely and polite manner; responds or takes messages based on caller needs.
5. Processes and scans all patient health information into the electronic patient health record, ensuring it is placed into the correct folder and is labeled using a standard naming convention.
6. Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to all Federal and State regulations and Chapa-De Indian Health policies regarding protecting and releasing patient health information in order to ensure privacy and confidentiality.
7. In the absence of the Health Information Manager or Supervisor, may answer questions requiring immediate attention; may consult with designated staff when patient health record questions arise.
8. Demonstrates knowledge of computer systems used by the Health Information Department.
9. Maintains good working relationship within the department and all other departments; functions effectively as a team member. Assists team members in completing his/her work when needed.
10. Must be able to keep up with busy workload
11. Understand and promote the mission, vision, and values of Chapa-De Indian Health both in the work place and in the community.
12. Maintain compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations, as they pertain to position including; HIPAA, Scope of Practice, Accreditation Standards, OSHA, and Chapa-De Indian Health Policies & Procedures.
13. Represents Chapa-De Indian Health in a positive and professional manner.
14. Other duties as assigned.




Required Experience:


QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  • 1. High school graduate or GED certificate/equivalent.
    2. A minimum of six (6) months of work experience in healthcare.
    3. Demonstrated ability to maintain compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations, as they pertain to position including: HIPAA, Hitech and California regulatory requirements.
    4. Proven verbal and written communication skills; ability to maintain high level of confidentiality.
    5. Applied knowledge using Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
    6. A minimum of six (6) months of experience using an Electronic Health Record.
    7. Familiarity with medical terminology.
    8. Current and in good standing: CA Driver’s License, DMV printout and proof of auto insurance.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. Accredited Registered Health Information Technician certification.
