SALARY INFORMATION
In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following date: Effective July 1, 2022 – 3.5% increase
Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

This recruitment will establish an Open eligible list. This list will be used to fill current and future Hazardous Materials Specialist II positions within the Health Care Agency, Environmental Health Division. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
The Environmental Health Division is comprised of various programs aimed towards protecting the health and safety of Orange County residents and visitors from harmful conditions in the environment. Staff enforce laws and regulations and emphasize education to assist businesses with providing healthy and safe communities. The Environmental Health Division regulates the following: retail, wholesale, and mobile food facilities; public housing; and public swimming pools.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Hazardous Materials Specialist II in the Solid Waste Program is responsible for technical and specialized work in the field of Solid Waste. The position provides regulatory oversight of permitting, inspection, investigation and enforcement of duties and responsibilities of comprehensive Solid Waste enforcement issues. Please note that this position has required inspections at 4:30 AM at the landfills on a quarterly or more basis. No exceptions.
Conducting field inspections and complaint investigations at active and closed landfills, other disposal sites, transfer stations, and composting facilities to ensure compliance with solid waste laws and regulations, including State Minimum Standards
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONSThe ideal candidate for the Solid Waste program will have at least three (3) years of experience working in the field of regulatory oversight related to compliance with California environmental laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards or three (3) years conducting field work associated with solid waste facilities and/or operations. Experience working as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS), Engineer, or Professional Geologist is desirable, but not required.
