Job Summary:


An employee in this classification performs work of routine difficulty performing grounds maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. Work is distinguished by the ability to apply pesticides, chemicals and fertilizer by maintaining the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture Chemical Applicator’s License. General supervision is received from the assigned manager.


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Good knowledge of routine vehicle and grounds equipment preventive maintenance.
  • Working skills to design, lay-out, and construct landscaped areas.
  • Must have and maintain a current State of Illinois Department of Agriculture Chemical Applicator’s License.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Illinois Commercial Drivers License with Air Brake endorsement.
  • Pre-employment DOT drug panel test required, with the ability to maintain compliance.
  • Working skill in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite, including but not limited to Word, Excel, Access and Publisher
  • Working skill in organizing work to meet established deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Working skill in interpersonal interaction to be applied to a variety of individuals with differing education, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Working skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Working skill in operating a personal computer, applicable software and peripheral equipment as well as learning and adapting to new and updated programs and technology.
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends when required by the department’s needs.

  • ISA certified arborist.


Essential Duties:


  • Operate and maintain all grounds equipment used in the Grounds Department for lawn care and landscaping.
  • Perform parking lot and sidewalk maintenance to ensure that conditions of the campus remain accessible by the public.
  • Coordinate and apply pesticides, chemicals, and fertilizer when needed to all grounds and plants to ensure proper health and growth.
  • Maintain all records pertaining to the purchase, storage, and application of chemicals used for grounds care and maintenance, as required by state or federal laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate with the Superintendent of Grounds in the selections and purchase of chemicals, fertilizer, seeds, trees, flowers, and some equipment required for proper grounds maintenance.
  • Maintains required training, licensure and/or certifications
  • Maintains confidentiality of privileged information and adheres to applicable privacy laws
  • Demonstrates sensitivity, understanding and respect of diverse populations within the workplace.
  • Maintains an understanding of the work of colleagues to effectively provide backup and/or support for co-workers during times when the division is short-staffed or experiencing an increased volume of work.
  • Adheres to department guidelines for attendance and punctuality


Other Duties:


  • Assist in furniture/office equipment moves and storage and help with pickup and delivery of donations to the college.
  • Put up/change informational, directional and parking type signs around the campus.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned which pertain to the job description.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes days/evenings/weekends as needed by the department.
