OVERALL JOB OBJECTIVE:

Under general supervision of the Program Coordinator to support coordination of portions of the Boulder Parks and Recreation Department’s programs, and to perform related duties as required, with a focus on Master Plan initiatives to lead the department in a growth of member and youth engagement and community health and wellness.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists Program Coordinator to implement the recreation program, which includes the following:
    • Assist in the coordination of the City’s recreational programs, which may include programs, classes, instructional recreation programs, community outreach, and any other services as needed.
    • Schedule adult and/or youth programs for recreation services.
    • Direct service to members including teaching classes and training clients as needed
    • Provide information to Program Coordinator to inform program’s service delivery goals which may include research best practice methods, create program plans, and evaluate existing programs to determine how best to meet community recreational needs.
  • Ensure all practical safety measures are observed, which includes, but is not limited to the following:
    • Enforce safety standards.
    • Maintain current licensing and required certifications as needed.
    • Take proper care of equipment and monitor inventory
    • Conduct regular inspections.
  • Perform administrative tasks, which includes, but is not limited to the following:
    • Acts as lead worker and may direct the work of other part-time and seasonal employees.
    • Information/data management: Compile and organize data (including paperwork and statistics) related to programs.
    • Utilize Departmental recreation programming software for facility booking, program maintenance, and program registration.
    • Update information on social media and website for program communication.
    • Meet and communicate with standard staff to schedule program offerings based on space availability and changing needs.
    • Support Program Coordinator to organize and submit recreation guide and website information. This includes writing program descriptions and developing marketing content as needed.

REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work tactfully and effectively with the public. Ability to give verbal instructions and to inspect the work of employees supervised. Ability to ensure all practical safety measures are observed. Ability to utilize all required safety equipment. Experience teaching fitness and personal training. Effective verbal and written communication skills. General computer experience. Acceptable background information including criminal conviction record and credit history. Valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation or related field, or any combination of equivalent education/experience. Two years of experience in recreation programming. Familiarity with positive youth development principles and strengths-based approaches to prevention and intervention. Knowledge and experience in community development concepts and practices. Group exercise and personal training certifications. Familiarity with multiple formats of fitness, yoga, and dance fitness. Experience working with recreation software. Well-rounded experience coordinating community recreational programs for youth and adults. Bi-lingual in Spanish and English.

WORKING CONDITIONS - Required Physical and Mental Effort, and Environmental Conditions:
Physical Demands: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Ability to perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Physical ability to stand, walk, and kneel; hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment.

Work Environment: Works in both indoor and outdoor environments that are oftentimes impacted weather and at times, unpredictable conditions.

Machines and equipment used in work include, but are not limited to: Uses sports equipment, standard office equipment including personal computers, calculators, and copy/fax machines on a daily basis.
