Summary:
Develops client relationships that will provide a "one touch" experience for patients asthey go through the financial process from clearance to claim adjudication. Position requires a high degree of intellectual proficiency and critical thinking skills as well as the ability to make appropriate decisions regarding situations of a complex nature. Reports to the Supervisor of Financial Counseling.
Responsibilities:
1. Criteria A: Counsels self-pay patients and those with insufficient insurance coverage in an effort to assist them in the determination of suitable payment arrangements and/or the disposition of expected patient balances. Criteria B: Counsels and pre-qualifies uninsured patients for State and Federal financial assistance programs, assists the patient through the process, and completes the necessary documentation. Criteria C: Makes recommendations for service deferral if patient is deemed unable to pay and consults with internal and external physicians to determine medical urgency. Criteria D: Refers potentially qualified patients to best source of financial assistance available for the patient's needs. Includes performing complex analysis of patient's assets and liabilities. Must understand and comprehend the intricacies of financial status.
2. Criteria A: Performs a financial analysis to determine eligibility for the State's Uninsured Program, assists the patient through the process, and completes the necessary documentation. Criteria B: Assesses patients for potential charity care based on the hospital's charity care policies and completes all required documentation. Criteria C: Updates information to ensure that the correct financial classification and information are in the hospital Criteria D: Works in collaboration with physicians, clinical resource managers, patient accounting, HIS, registration and verification to address the patient's financial needs while securing a source of funding, recommending service deferral, or charitable care.
3. Criteria A: Conducts interviews at bedside, ensuring optimal customer service and personal assistance. Criteria B: Participates in continuum of the life of a claim by working collaboratively with the collections department to identify patients that may be in need of assistance. Includes review and recommendation for bad debt based on historical patient information. Criteria C: Works on a daily basis with the hospital-based state worker to support the Medicaid application process. Criteria D: Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.

Required: This position requires a minimum formal education of Bachelor Degree and minimum of one year job-related experience or an Associates Degree with 4 years job-related experience.AA
Minimum Experience: four years
Desired: Customer service and organizational skills. National Association of Healthcare Access Mgmt (NAHAM) certification. Bilingual-Spanish preferred.
