Fiber Splicing Technician

JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for the maintenance and installation of new and existing fiber in an inside and outside plant environment. This position reports to the Fiber Manager.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain knowledge of all organizational policies and governmental laws
- Responsible for completing work orders and retrieving proper signatures for accurate billing
- Ensures all installation work is done according to quality standards
- Access the fiber optic splicer enclosure and splice the necessary fibers directly from ladder
- Troubleshoot and repair problems utilizing optical test equipment such as OTDR, Fiber Identifier and Fiber Scope
- Prep, tray and splice fiber optic cable ranging from single fiber to 288 count, and perform ring cut when needed
- Drilling concrete, hammering and sawing EMT, PVC and microduct pipe, install connectors and attachments as needed to NEC and local building codes.
- Install boxes and terminals both EMT and PVC. Install and secure EMT, PVC and microduct pathway. Fire stop per state, fire codes, and practices.
- Install fiber optic cables, coaxial cables and CAT 5/6 cables. Identify and document all cables and boxes correctly.
- Perform testing and turn-ups of subscriber drops in both inside and outside plant environment
- Pulling, routing, installing, and terminating structured cabling in an enterprise office, manufacturing and new construction environments.
- Planning and acquiring supply needs
- Read, understand, and updated building drawings
- Manage and meet project deadlines
- Running of phone and data cables, including fiber optic, audio, video, and security camera cabling
- Accurately test copper and fiber (multimode and single mode) cables to required certification
- Physically install Cat3, Cat 5, Cat Se and Cat 6 Structured Cable Distribution Systems
- Terminate, assemble and install 8-pin modular connectors and coaxial connectors
- Test, diagnose and correct copper and optical fiber problems
- Maintain and reference industry standards including ANSI,EIAITIA and local and Low Voltage Code
- Determine closet and equipment layouts and install closet hardware including backboards , connecting blocks, racks, patch panels and fiber enclosures
- Work safely at all times utilizing the necessary Personal Protection Equipment
- Perform administrative tasks including, but not limited to, documenting test results and as-built, maintaining log books, providing labor summary reports, etc.
- Ability to properly instruct other technicians on techniques, works, etc. ., as needed to keep project work flowing
- Possess a high level of independent judgment within established procedures
- Perform other duties as requested by supervisor

- Strong knowledge of fiber optic theory which includes fiber loss, connector types, and the different types of fibers
- Full knowledge of operating fiber optic splicing equipment
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and building plans, document daily records and reports, and hours worked
- Demonstrated ability to use and care for fiber optic test equipment, ruby light, power meter, and OTDR and document test results accurately
- Ability to complete designated amount of work in a specified time frame (e. g. , quality jobs per day), adjusting work assignments or schedules to meet changing work-related priorities or demands.
- Ability to climb and work at elevations (e. g. , from ladders, poles, lift trucks) exceeding 18 feet
- Ability to work in confined spaces (e. g. , attics, crawl spaces, utility holes)
- Ability to perform strenuous physical activities including, but not limited to: lifting objects weighing over 100 pounds
- Ability to perform job activities outdoors in different weather conditions (e. g. , extreme cold and/or heat, inclement weather)
- When working aloft, employee's weight and tools combined may not exceed the 280-pound weight limit as specified by the manufacturer
- Ability to read, write and speak the English language to communicate with employees, contractors, suppliers, in person, on the phone, and by written communications in a clear, straight-forward, and professional manner

- Safely using weight-bearing equipment (such as safety harness and ladders) within the maximum weight limitations of that equipment
- Demonstrating a high level of maturity and leadership
- Ability to deal with ambiguity, work in a dynamic fluid environment and effectively cope with change
- Ability to pass pre-employment screenings (motor vehicle, drug, and background)
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s Degree or equivalent work experience
- Valid Driver's license with satisfactory driving record
- 1-3 years experience installing and maintaining fiber optic products and services
- Certified Fiber Optic Technician certification preferred
- Certified as a BICSI Technician or similar certification preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS
- May be required to work long and unpredictable hours including nights and weekends
- Working outdoors in all types of weather
- Exposure to dust, fluctuating temperatures, and periodic high noise levels
