General Description:

Provide academic advising and educational, career, and personal counseling services to current and prospective students. Provide guidance, support, feedback, and information to students as they choose and progress toward educational and career goals. Recommend and provide interpretation of tests for purposes of placement in college courses and career decision making. Communicate with representatives from four-year colleges, high schools, and career technical centers to enhance counseling/advising to students. Provide referrals to community agencies and resources when necessary. Consult with faculty, administration, and staff; serve as a liaison with assigned departments. Maintain appropriate records. Facilitate student development group work. Participate in appropriate College activities, committees etc.; perform other appropriate duties as assigned.


Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC) in Michigan (or eligibility for Michigan license if resident of another state).
  • Experience as a counselor in an academic setting.
  • Commitment to student recruitment, retention, success and the comprehensive community college concept.
  • Desire to make significant contributions to the counseling program
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to people of all ages, races, abilities/disabilities, and social-economic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate office technology, software, & equipment. Establishing yourself as the “go to” person with all equipment and software.
  • Ability and willingness to upgrade skills including technology or process changes.
  • Ability to mentor, coach and work with student workers/interns while setting a good example by demonstrating professional workplace behavior and work ethics.
  • Demonstrated ability to create a warm, welcoming environment to students, parents, faculty/staff and community members especially during busy/chaotic times.
  • Demonstrated use of tact, judgment and discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a successful team while accomplishing tasks and assignments without assistance, even while multi-tasking.
  • Highly motivated and solution oriented with a high degree of integrity, ethics and dedication to the mission of the College.
  • Demonstrated excellence in both oral and written communication skills.
  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing, keyboarding and work on computer (hand/eye strain), speaking in English via phone or in person
  • Strong knowledge of grammar, punctuation and writing techniques with the ability to produce malleable documents.
  • Willingness to work a varied schedule.

Essential Function:

  • Work with students as assigned which may include day, night, online, as well as at the main campus and extension centers. This includes “drop-in” counseling.
  • Provide educational counseling and assist in development of their individual educational plans/goals for new and continuing students. This would include, but is not limited to the following populations: veterans, foreign students, early college, promise, autistic and/or students with special needs.
  • Serve as expert on College programs and transfer requirements.
  • Offer presentations, workshops, student groups, seminars on personal development, mental health and/or college/career planning.
  • Provide coaching for students on academic probation or in need of behavioral intervention.
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions to assist students in resolving personal problems, may provide crisis intervention when needed and/or refer students to community agencies or other support.
  • Establish and promote an effective learning environment that maximize documented student learning.
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline.
  • Conduct student or faculty/staff professional development training as requested.
  • Keep official records and collect data as requested.
  • Prepare, submit and maintain reports related to student learning.
