As an Executive Publisher you are responsible for maintaining, improving an expanding a high-revenue and high-impact portfolio of journals and related products in a specific field within STM Journals. For this Secondment the main journal portfolio focus area is Health Studies / Public Health.
You develop the strategy, help develop goals and monitor the progress within your portfolio of journal titles and related products and services, on a highly complex level. Open access publishing, exploring portfolio growth in China and taking a lead in developing a positive image / profile raising communication plan for the Social Sciences are likely focus areas.
As Executive Publisher you have a proven track record of demonstrating the ability to work independently and you are a lead example to and a coach/mentor for Senior Publishers, Publishers and Associate Publishers. You play an instrumental role in championing a positive team spirit. You also have an ambassadorial role to work effectively with multiple stakeholders within STMJ and the wider Elsevier organization including Operations, Sales, and Technology teams.
The role reports to the Publishing Director and can be based in any of the STMJ primary locations.
Your responsibilities
Portfolio Management and Development
- Develop the strategy for the portfolio ensure alignment with the department’s and STM Journals organization’s strategies.
- Work with editors, authors, editorial boards and the academic community at large to ensure sufficient copy flow of relevant, high quality manuscripts.
- Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors. Continuous and pro-active maintenance of the existing portfolio, matching developments in the external marketplace, including the development of Open Access initiatives.
- Continuous quality control and monitoring of all aspects of day-to-day editorial, production and publishing operations and actively address improvements where required.
- Meet portfolio related objectives with regards to content growth, articles market share, citation share, relative impact factor, editorial speeds and author and editor satisfaction.
- Manage the editorial fees budget and provide input to pricing processes.
Relationship Management and Networking
- Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts and networks with key external stakeholders, including editors, authors, society representatives, university leadership and industry, with a view to understanding their professional and organizational needs and ongoing market developments.
- Establish, manage and maintain excellent contacts with key stakeholders within the company, including editorial, production, publishing, marketing and technology teams, coordinating activities as they relate to the portfolio’s needs and development.
- to take a lead in developing a long-term positive image / profile raising communication plan for the Social Sciences
Innovation
- Develop new content formats and new ways to present content to the customers in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and business partners.
- Develop new publishing formats and business models.
- Develop new peer review formats and initiatives.
Business Development
- Identify and map market needs and business opportunities.
- Develop and where feasible acquire new products and services, including society journals, platforms, databases and conferences.
Qualifications
- PhD or University degree in a related field or Social Science an advantage
- Minimum 5+ years scientific publishing experience.
- The ability to build, nurture and manage editorial boards is a must.
- Strong commercial and negotiation skills.
- Experience in working with societies.
- Knowledge of the publishing process and relevant market developments.
- Knowledge of relevant parts of the academic world and its sociology.
- Proven track record of successful revamp(s) of journals in competitive areas
- Proven track record of full awareness of applications and remaining up to date with technology, social media and content enhancement in the scientific arena.
- Excellent networking skills, financial awareness and business management skills.
