About the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):

Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

Salary:

The base salary for this position is $38,688.

The Environmental Manager works in the Indiana air pollution control program in the Ambient Monitoring Section of the Office of Air Quality. In this role, you are responsible for operating and maintaining Particulate, Speciation, Lead, Ozone, Sulfur Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, and Meteorological monitors statewide in Indiana. Your additional duties will include retrieval and validation of data from the instruments. The data collected from these networks are used to determine attainment of the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS), track air quality trends, and to keep the public informed of current and past air quality conditions

The essential functions of this roles are as follows:

• Assist the PM2.5 FRM Filter-based network Parameter Specialist
• Provide a back-up to the TSP-Pb Network
• Perform air quality monitoring and sample pickup statewide.
• Repair and perform maintenance on monitoring equipment.
• Calibrate and audit field monitoring equipment.
• Assist in implementing monitoring changes.
• Write and edit Standard Operating Procedures and policies for the Ambient Monitoring Program.
• Write equipment and supply requisitions for the support of the lead and fine particulate monitoring programs.
• Perform data entry and data validation.

• Extensive knowledge of and ability to adapt and apply the principles of operation of air sampling and calibration equipment.
• Ability to review and evaluate the operation and calibration of instruments and ability to determine the validity of data and formulate the corrective actions needed if problems are discovered.
• Extensive knowledge of applicable federal and state air pollution control laws, regulations and policies.
• Extensive knowledge of electronics, repair, and troubleshooting techniques for complex air sampling equipment.
• Ability to evaluate new technological equipment to determine its use in a program based upon the current level of technology.
• Ability to use electric and electronic test equipment.
• Ability to use analytical testing and measuring equipment.
• Knowledge of micrometeorology, chemistry, statistics, and mathematics.
• Proficiency in the use of computer programs such as Word, Excel, etc.
• Broad knowledge in the use of a DMDS (Data Management and Display System).
• Ability to adapt new computer applications and developments to already existing computer network.
