The Interactive News team , a group of developer-journalists embedded in The New York Times newsroom, is searching for a collaborative project editor, technical manager and staff coach to join our team. If you have experience guiding teams in database-backed web application development, some experience coaching others and interest in driving newsroom innovation, we encourage you to consider this role! Reporting to the team's director, you will work with newsroom developers and fellow editors to lead on creative, technical and editorial concerns as well as manage staff. You'll oversee both daily project work, longer-range strategic planning and staff development. Specifically, you will provide: Technical guidance for database-backed web application development, helping teams make technical choices while assessing and mitigating risks Editorial guidance , helping a team focus its thoughts to make the greatest impact for readers while maintaining accuracy Project editing , inclusively leading roadmap and deadline development, then guiding a team to deliver Interdepartmental diplomacy , aligning goals and approach with newsroom and external partners Staff coaching and management, helping 3-5 direct reports understand their strengths and focus their growth through coaching and formal evaluation Inclusive and participatory facilitation , to encourage all perspectives in team dialogue and decisions Team-level leadership on strategic projects that span the entire team as assigned by the Director At least one year of experience as a project team leader (either as an individual contributor or manager), including: Experience facilitating technical decisions with groups of 3+ developers Experience developing a project strategy, from first idea to production launch to scaling usage Experience setting an implementation roadmap, then guiding a team to deliver on deadline Experience managing relationships with other departments and partners external to the team Experience as a mentor, with demonstrated experience growing others' skills Familiarity with strategies to ensure editorial accuracy, technical reliability, and information security Desire to bring teams and projects to the next level of reader impact, by harnessing the full power of each contributors' strengths We encourage candidates from all backgrounds and experience.
