Provides legal support on all aspects of University employment law matters, including to the Office of the Provost and the Division of Human Resources. Provides legal support to each of the collective bargaining teams; serves as member of each bargaining team. Manages general legal matters, advises University officials on legal aspects of policy, assists in formulation of policies, and interacts with members of the University community, legal professionals.

  • Provides legal advice and support on all aspects of employment matters as it relates to the faculty and to primarily the Vice Provost for Faculty Leadership and Success, the Associate Provost of Planning & Finance, and other applicable offices within the Office of the Provost.
  • Provides legal advice and support on all aspects of employment matters as it relates to the non-faculty staff and the Division of Human Resources.
  • Provides legal advice and support to all collective bargaining teams, including serving on the collective bargaining team, for the five (5) unions at the University.
  • Manages general legal matters, advises University officials on legal aspects of policy, assists in formulation of policies, and interacts with members of the University community, legal professionals, officials of state and federal government and others as assigned by the General Counsel.
  • Provides legal assistance in the investigation of potential violations of law, regulations and FIU policy regarding employment law and assists the clients in remedying any deficiencies. Conducts policy and/or regulation-making for the University.
  • Creates and presents trainings on relevant aspects of employment law for the faculty, chairs, and deans and non-faculty, as necessary.
  • Advises University executives in policy-making functions regarding employment law. Interprets policy for University officials up to and including presidential level.
  • Provides a high level of professional legal services to the University.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Law degree (L.L.B. or J.D.) and licensed to practice law with at least ten (10) experience as an attorney. Must be a member of the Florida Bar or become a member within twelve months of employment.
Desired Qualifications
  • Law degree and licensed to practice law in the State of Florida with at least ten (10) years of increasing level of responsibilities in the area of employment law involving faculty and staff employees in higher education.
  • Experience in traditional labor law is preferred.
