ELEMENTARY SPECIAL ED TEACHER

Falls Church City Public Schools is seeking an Elementary School Special Education Teacher.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of FCCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum, FCCPS policies and effective instructional practices.
- A thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process.
- The ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
- The ability to infuse technology into curriculum.
- Knowledge of and adherence to legal procedures as contained in local, state and federal policies governing special education, including IDEA laws and guidelines.
- The ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents and the community.
- Knowledge of the FCCPS case management manual and special education laws and procedures.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Human relations skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Have a Bachelors Degree in an approved program for special education - general curriculum or a completed major in special education - general curriculum or adapted curriculum in the education of students with disabilities in the assigned area required.
- Be eligible for or possess a valid Collegiate Professional License from the State of Virginia in the content area being taught.
- Be highly qualified in content area or hold necessary content endorsement.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Serve as case manager for students with disabilities
- Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment
- Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies
- Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate
- Collect, analyze and use data to development, implement and evaluate Individualized Education Plan (IEP) services
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, and provide individualized and small group instruction to meet the needs of each student
- Translate lesson plans into learning experiences for the best use of available instruction time
- Guide the learning process toward achievement of all IEPs and establish clear objectives for the students
- Meet with parents to discuss their children's progress and determine priorities for their children and their individualized educational needs
- Select and administer appropriate assessments in accordance with division testing practices for eligibility and IEPs
- Participate in eligibility committee meetings and contribute to the development of IEPs
- Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop IEPs designed to promote students' educational, physical, and social/emotional development
- Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of students in inclusive classroom settings
- Collaborate and work effectively with paraprofessionals to meet the needs of students
- Assist in collection of data for providing appropriate classroom interventions and monitoring progress in meeting IEP Goals
- Assist in preparation of data for local, state, and federal reports
- Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities
- Follow guidelines in the FCCPS case manager manual
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and FCCPS policies and procedures
