Position Summary:

Thousands of Wisconsin kids need help in reading and you can make all the difference. Offer your time and talent as a tutor and be more for these students.

As a Reading Tutor, you’ll help students in kindergarten through third grade to become better readers. With great training and onsite coaching, we’ll prepare you to work one-on-one or in small groups to help kids develop their reading skills and confidence! Students make the most progress when you are there, so our tutors serve during school hours and are needed for the whole school year.

We are currently recruiting for the 2021-22 school year. Tutors have the option of beginning in August 2021, October 2021 or January 2022.

This is an AmeriCorps member position with Reading Corps. Although the earnings are modest, the rewards are great! You’ll join an amazing group tutors, determined to help students be more.

What to Expect:

• Be a change maker by providing one-on-one or small group reading help during school hours.
• Be committed to helping students build their skills and confidence.
• Be ready to grow by participating in on-site coaching sessions two times per month to review student progress and get feedback.
• Be impactful by participating in training and ongoing professional development.
• Be the motivation by representing Reading Corps at school-sponsored activities to help build awareness of Reading Corps and early literacy.
• Be an ambassador of the program by sharing your experience with the wider community.

Perks Package:

Perks at 35 hours a week:

• A stipend of $750 paid every 2 weeks
  • $12,750 total for 900 hours of service starting in October 2021
  • $8,250 total for 675 hours of service starting in January 2022
• Up to $3,172 for tuition or student loans*
• Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment
• Individual health insurance — Monthly premium 100% covered
• Child care assistance — Based on family size and income

Perks at 25 hours a week:

• A stipend of $525 paid every 2 weeks
  • $8,925 total for 675 hours of service starting in October 2021
  • $5,775 total for 450 hours of service starting in January 2022
• Up to $2,417 for tuition or student loans*
• Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment

• The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild, foster child or step-child.

What it Takes:

Great tutors come from all walks of life. Whether you are 18 or 85, the most important qualification is a desire to help children succeed. That said, you also need to meet the following minimum qualifications by the time you begin your service.

• Are dependable and have a history of good attendance
• Able to understand and follow instructions
• Can set a pace and maintain a schedule with students
• Have basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)
• Can speak, read, and write English fluently
• 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent
• A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States*
• Agree to and successfully complete a background check

• Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
