THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections, State Correctional Institution at Albion, is seeking a highly motivated Educational Guidance Counselor, Corrections Education to join the Education Department.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an Education Guidance Counselor, Corrections Education, you will provide individual and group counseling and guidance to incarcerated adults on enrolling in ABE/GED classes. You will assist incarcerated adults in selecting and enrolling in vocational classes based on academic level, interests, and availability of courses. This position also serves as an Alternate GED examiner.

  • Full-time employment.
  • Work schedule 07:45 to 15:45 (7:45 AM - 3:45 PM) Monday to Friday
  • 37.5 hour work week
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Experience and Training Requirements - Two years of professional experience in educational guidance and educational counseling, and a bachelor's degree in the social sciences, behavioral sciences, education, social work, or counseling; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training, which includes one year of experience in educational guidance and educational counseling.
  • Special Requirement - Employees assigned to a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma facility must possess a valid and active Educational Specialist 1 or Educational Specialist 2 certification in the field of elementary or secondary school guidance or school counseling issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. When no candidates possess the named certifications, the candidate must be eligible for an Emergency Permit issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education that is appropriate to the position.
  • Special Requirement - An employee assigned to a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma facility who was hired based on eligibility for an Emergency Permit must obtain a valid and active Educational Specialist 1 or Educational Specialist 2 certification in the field of elementary or secondary school guidance or school counseling issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
