JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Playa Restoration Highway Cleanup Manager is responsible for the safe roadside cleanup of any road debris following the 80,000 person event population-exodus affecting local highways and communities. This operation promotes the Leave No TraceTM (LNT) ethos and one of the founding Ten Principles of Burning Man. Highway Cleanup is to be completed in accordance with the timelines given by Burning Man, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) stipulations. This position is active immediately post-event, until early October. This is a temporary, full-time, ineligible for benefits role, located in the Black Rock Desert/Gerlach, Nevada area.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Field Management, Representation, and Response (50 %)

  • Officially represent on the behalf of the Environmental Restoration Manager on the local highways and in communities as needed, interfacing with cooperating agencies to identify and accomplish shared goals.
  • Locate, monitor, and document environmental impact concerns; take action as necessary to ensure compliance with Leave No Trace procedures
  • Ensure the safety of the personnel and cleanup operating procedures

Staff Management (30%)

  • Assist in the management of Highway Cleanup personnel, overseeing work activity, location, and hours
  • Provide managerial support and operational oversight as necessary, maintaining an awareness of the DPW timeline and plan work accordingly
  • Ensure communications are prompt and professional and that appropriate discretion is maintained
  • Mentor staff to nurture their growth and ensure their success in creating a smooth experience for their team and themselves
  • Respond to personnel-related matters, including but not limited to conflict resolution, workers comp claims, payroll tracking, and human resources inquiries
  • Demonstrate leadership through transparent decision making, clear communication, and by exercising integrity in every interaction
  • Maintain an ongoing effort to recruit and train new staff members; foster a team culture that serves to improve staff retention

Assets Management (10 %)

  • Maintain inventory of all Highway Cleanup safety gear and equipment.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)

  • Perform various other duties as assigned by the Environmental Restoration Manager

Standard Operating Procedures (5 %)

  • Assist in the continued refinement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), job description, and policies for the Playa Restoration department.

  • Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team.
  • Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Knowledge of Burning Man values, ethos, and 10 Principles; especially Leaving No Trace
  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada
  • Read, understand and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies, protocols and behavioral standards.
  • A professional demeanor in verbal and written communications with strong communication, interpersonal, and teaching skills
  • Able to follow direction and respectfully interface with collaborators
  • Effective at task switching, with good time-management skills, able to evaluate and reprioritize workload as necessary
  • Situationally aware and safety-minded, able to work long hours in extreme conditions
  • Ability to think quickly, problem solve, apply critical thinking to situations, and remain calm under pressure
  • Proven leadership skills, a team player who leads by example
  • Well organized and detail-oriented

Preferred

  • Previously worked for Burning Man’s Playa Restoration Crew and/or is familiar with its operation and methods
  • Experienced in working cleanup for any Regional Events Playa Restoration and/or is familiar with its operation and methods
  • Previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture
  • OSHA 10 Certification
  • Experienced (1-3 years) in event-based production work

  • This is a temporary, full-time, ineligible for benefits role, located in the Black Rock Desert/Gerlach, Nevada area.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • On-playa: This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding and requires individuals with good physical health and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
