Job Description: Director of Steps to Success
The Public Schools of Brookline seeks a Director of Steps to Success to coordinate and supervise the work of the 3-8 and 9-12 Program Advisor Team. The Director reports to the Senior Director of Teaching and Learning for Secondary Education.
Specific job responsibilities include:
Coordinate and supervise the work of the 3-8 and 9-12 PSB Steps to Success Advisor Team.
- Meet regularly with PSB Steps to Success Advisors to plan and supervise their work.
- Meet regularly with the PSB “Steps to Success” Social Worker/Adjustment Counselors to plan and supervise their work.
- Assist Steps to Success Program Advisors in their advocacy and support for students and families.
- Serve as the liaison between students/families and school counselors/deans/other school staff.
- Coordinate and supervise advisor case management of each student supported by the program advisor; review, develop and manage effective case management systems.
- Attend school based meetings as needed in support of students with program advisors.
- Establish summer calendar and work expectations for all PSB Steps to Success Program Advisors.
- Work closely with BHS Deans and K-8 principals on supervision of advisors and integration into the school community.
- Support the transition of 8th grade students to BHS.
- Develop and coordinate After Hours U and Teen Advantage, after school programs for students in grades 4-8 at four elementary schools including developing curricula, hiring staff, supervising part-time staff, enrolling students, monitoring attendance and outcomes.
- Coordinate after-school programs for students with university partners (Boston College INK program, Simmons Girls Mentoring program).
- Develop after school supports for BHS students (i.e. homework support, mentoring, etc).
- Facilitate professional development for PSB STS advisors, social workers/adjustment counselors, Homework Center Directors & Assistant Homework Center Directors
- Publicly represent Steps to Success to PSB, BHA and other community partners on Steps to Success progress, data, needs, etc.
Coordinate the following aspects of the partnership between the Public Schools of Brookline and Steps to Success, Inc.
- Meet regularly to work with Steps to Success, Inc. Director and staff.
- With the Senior Director of Teaching and Learning for Secondary Education, implement PSB collaboration with STS College Success Initiative.
- Facilitate student enrollment in camps, internships and job opportunities established/provided by STS Inc.
The Director is supervised by the Senior Director of Teaching and Learning for Secondary Education in the Office of Teaching and Learning.
This is Unit B position, 210 days/year. The work year follows the school calendar for Unit B, with an additional 27 days to be worked between July 1 and August 31 to supervise and support the summer programs and the work of the PSB Advisors.
Qualifications:
- Background and proven ability in working effectively to motivate and involve youth in this age group and families of diverse backgrounds.
- Strong interpersonal skills in counseling, supporting, and conveying high expectations for young people.
- Familiarity with adolescent development.
- Strong written and oral communication and public presentation skills.
- Experience working as a part of a collaborative team.
- Ability to think creatively about program expansion and development
- Experience coordinating programs in community and/or school-based settings.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to gather and analyze student and program data.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree
- Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States
Preferred qualifications
- At least 2 years of relevant leadership experience preferred
- Experience working with public housing authorities or other community organizations
- Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling or related field
- Licensure in Social Work, Counseling or related field
- Bilingual (Spanish/Haitian Creole/English) a plus
- Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
