Director of Payload Engineering


This position reports to the Vice President of Engineering at Ball Aerospace.


What You’ll Do:


  • Lead and manage the Payload Engineering organization at Ball Aerospace.
  • Set and lead the strategy for the Payload Engineering organization to include organization design, payload capability development and employee development.
  • Develop efficient support of proposal development and new business support including effective use of company heritage.
  • Develop robust project engineering capability.
  • Coordinate efficient utilization of capital assets to develop, test and verify our payload offerings.
  • Provide leadership and functional management of principal staff to support the breadth of managed responsibilities within the Mission Area by exhibiting behaviors aligned with the tenants of Ball’s Inspire, Connect and Achieve (ICA) leadership model. The behaviors would include providing a unifying vision, understanding the diverse needs of others to meet business challenges and acting with humility and a collaborative spirit.
  • Establish, develop and maintain strong relationships with Engineering peers, internal stakeholders and external customers.
  • Be a principal member of the Engineering leadership team.
  • Provide functional management of principal staff to support the breadth of managed responsibilities within the organization.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Support Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.


What You’ll Need:


  • BS/BA or higher in Engineering or a related field, plus 15 or more years of related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e. Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Two years of related experience may be substituted for each year of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Related experience in technology management and strategic direction preferred.
  • An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain DoD/Top Secret clearances is required; current clearances preferred.

  • Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.


A current DoD clearance and/or SCI access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position, however applicant must be willing and eligible for submission within 60-90 days after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access. Compensation & Benefits:


  • HIRING SALARY RANGE:
    $171,000 - $235,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
  • Subject to business performance and recommendations of management, this role may be eligible to participate in an incentive compensation plan.
  • Subject to business and individual performance, and recommendations of management, this role may be eligible to participate in a long-term incentive compensation plan.
