POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Compliance manages the development, updating and documentation of University policies, coordinates the provision of legal support to all University functions, and in coordination with various University personnel, ensures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. The Director of Compliance serves the university as an institutional leader, works closely with the President and her Cabinet and serves as though partner in University legal concerns. Specifically, the position collaborates with the Vice President for Institutional Equity on institutional compliance including Title IX, VII and other federal compliance, serves as a deputy Title IX Coordinator and coordinates legal services contracted with outside counsel for the institution.

Essential Functions Statement(s)
Compliance
- With the support of outside legal counsel, interprets the constitutional, statutory and regulatory framework in which the University operates and provides legal and policy advice in a variety of areas affecting the University, including, but not limited to, employment law, student legal issues, intellectual property, real estate, contracts, organizational governance, affiliated entities, sponsored research, disabilities, drug-free workplace requirements, computer and information technology issues, copyright issues, defamation issues, civil rights, sexual harassment, fundraising, and other areas related to the legal environment of higher education.
- Supports, monitors, and assesses university-wide compliance with laws, policies, and procedures of local, state, and federal regulations; including compliance with Clery, EEO (including Title VII), Title IX, the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Develops a compliance program including control systems to prevent or respond to violations of legal guidelines and internal policies.
- Develops policies and programs that encourage employees to report suspected actions or omissions, reasonably believed to be a violation of laws, regulations or the University's policies or procedures, without fear of retaliation.
Legal Services Coordination and Guidance
- Serves as the clearinghouse for all requests for legal assistance from appropriate staff and administrators of the University. Determines if requests for legal assistance are appropriate or required.
- If referred to outside counsel, supervises and monitors such engagements.
- Oversee budget for outside counsel engagements.
- Works with the University's insurance broker regarding any required legal representation.
- Provides professional and authoritative legal and policy advice, always representing the University's best interests.
- Advises and consults with Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and Admissibility Review Office ARO regarding immigration related legal matters.
- Tracks and analyzes legal expenditures to ensure efficient use of University resources while maintaining quality of service.
Deputy Title IX Coordinator
- In support of the Title IX Coordinator:
- Develops, implements, coordinates, and conducts educational programs and initiatives designed to educate and support faculty, staff, and students regarding their rights and, where applicable, obligations under Title IX, including reporting options/responsibilities, support services, University policy and applicable disciplinary code, grievance procedures, confidential resources, etc.
- Selects, trains, and oversees the Title IX team across critical areas of the institution; ensures investigators, adjudicators and those involved with processing Title IX complaints are adequately trained in compliance with Title IX guidance.
- Identifies systemic issues relating to complaints and determines what resources should be adopted in response, including review and revision of the University's sexual misconduct policies, increased monitoring, supervision or security at locations where sexual misconduct is reported to occur, and increased education and prevention efforts to targeted populations.
- Collaborates and coordinates with compliance partners across the institution to support the University's overlapping compliance needs and responsibilities.
- Communicates with local law enforcement and government agencies to ensure reports are handled appropriately and in a timely manner; coordinates with on campus and local victim advocacy organizations and service providers.
- Ensures ongoing compliance with Title IX by collecting and analyzing data, writing comprehensive reports, and maintaining records of investigations.
Policy Management
- Recommends policy and procedure changes based on current or emerging laws, litigation and regulations, and assists University personnel in the development, preparation and review of related policies and procedures.
- Reviews, Coordinates updates of and maintains the University's catalog of published policies.

Requirements:Education and Experience: This position requires a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an American Bar Association accredited law school and at least five years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Communication/Language: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Computer Skills: Proficiency in common business applications (Microsoft Office, Google Applications, cloud storage applications, etc.)
