POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the CEO and a member of the senior management team, the Director of Business Development provides facility-wide strategic planning, leadership in positioning the hospital with a distinct competitive advantage and direct supervision of the Community Liaison Team. Responsibilities include: 1) Implements & directs the philosophy’s, policies and procedures and systems for business development, communication to referral sources and customer service 2) Maintains and utilizes ongoing market analysis to establish an effective customer base; 3) Coaches the Community Liaison Team to a high level of effectiveness in targeting, the cultivation of business relationships and achieving desirable indicators. 4) Develops and implements marketing programs, promotions, and internal/external communications. 5) Establishes and sustains a professional rapport with physicians, clinicians, community/professional organizations, commercial insurance companies, public officials and other health / human services provider; 6) Bridges industry knowledge to competitively advantage the facility’s service structure; 7) Possess a detailed understanding of the community’s mental health needs, compliment of services available and post-treatment outcomes achieved; 8) coordinates the administrative functions related to managed care activities and 9) Business development and marketing initiatives are facilitated with an attentiveness to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other confidentiality considerations.
Education / Licensure:
Candidate will possess an accredited bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, business administration, or behavioral health related field. A master’s degree in business administration or healthcare administration may be complimentary to some aspects of the job.
Experience:
A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a business development or related management position resulting in measurable results, preferred direct experience managing and training a sales team. In addition, detailed knowledge of the behavioral health and/or substance abuse industry is preferred.
Skills:
1) A demonstrated record of performance in a similar position within a healthcare setting and background of progressive responsibility in promotion/sales, market analysis and/or utilization management. 2) Basic management skills i.e. sales team supervision, marketing/advertising, and human resources 3) Strong verbal and written communication to an individual, small and medium size audiences 4) Broad familiarity with the behavioral health industry i.e. payer relations, treatment modalities, media relations and political landscape 5) Basic computer skills i.e. e-mail, WORD, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Publisher and data base management.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Business Development
- Develops and executes marketing/sales plans and programs to ensure the profit growth and expansion of the hospitals products and services
- Takes professional initiative and ensures appropriate mix of public relations, volume generating activities and new market development.
- Represents business development department and shares the role that all employees play in representing the facility at all employee orientations.
- Secures and maintains competitive information on products/services in order to distinguish company and develop market share.
- Develops and implements communication strategies, plans and materials consistent with organizations marketing image.
- Cultivates professional and department credibility among senior leadership to evolve internal support of business development efforts i.e. speaking engagements, event sponsorship, e-marketing, tours and the continuity of care.
- Possesses an in-depth understanding of in-house clinical services, treatment modalities commonly utilized and the anticipated benefits to referral sources.
- Monitors and adheres to high ethical and compliance standards prescribed by the company. Initiates immediate action if discovering questionable marketing or business development activities.
- Prepares and recommends a department budget that reflects good stewardship over available resources.
- Effectively utilizes Home Office, Vice President of Business Development for consultation, professional development and access to the tools and resources necessary to manage the Business Development department.
Customer Service
- Champions the AIDET approach to customer service (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation and Thank-You). Models a steady practice of AIDET throughout the customer experience. In-person and telephone communication is consistently attentive, responsive and reflects “helpfulness”.
- Conducts satisfaction surveys with referral sources on a routine basis to ensure superior customer service.
- Professional awareness and boundaries are observed. Unnecessary self-disclosure is minimized.
- The third ring answers telephones whenever possible and a professional greeting. Dedicated extensions/mobile phones with voice mail have a personalized greeting, and messages retrieved/responded to in a timely manner.
- Critical customer encounters are met with advanced skills and timely resolution.
Department Leadership
- Requisitions, interviews, selects and actively on-boards and trains budgeted personnel.
- Manages with high visibility, accessibility and upholds an “open-door fair treatment” approach.
- Conducts regular department meetings to facilitate effective communication and staff engagement.
- Maintains a sufficient number of policy and procedures and other instructional guidelines for department operations.
- Conducts coaching sessions in the field with community liaisons and provides verbal and written feedback.
- Consistently oversees the productivity and skills of their team
- Ensures the availability of equipment and material resources needed for designed services.
- Participates in the budgeting process and monitors resources to approved budgetary guidelines.
- While representing the department’s interest, ultimately facilitates an effective facility-wide multidisciplinary team.
Safety & Quality Management
- Continuously approaches service delivery from a quality improvement perspective i.e. qualitatively and quantitatively. Able to present complimentary and critical customer feedback to appropriate leaders that has a high potential to reinforce or correct future opportunities.
- Supports a facility-wide quality/performance improvement plan. Opportunities for improvement are identified, initiatives implemented, and indicators monitored to desired outcomes.
- Reviews and as appropriate investigates risk occurrences to practice guidelines, and “gets in front” with proactive communication.
- Takes reasonable precautions to prevent a breach of confidential information and adheres to policies of reporting suspected HIPAA violations. Instructs the Community Liaison Team on department and position specific confidentiality considerations.
Service Development & Promotion
- Maintains for self and others a high-level customer service orientation.
- Possesses a detailed understanding of the value and deliverables of the services provided. Aides the business development team to accurately represent the program’s capabilities and patient outcomes data.
- Effectively utilizes medical and clinical staff to address areas inappropriate to the position held.
- Arranges or provides meaningful staff development opportunities via in-house and external resources.
