The Director has overall responsibility for all of the activities within the Emergency Department. Responsible for providing a climate in which professional nursing is practiced. Participates in department-specific and interdepartmental strategic planning. Responsible for activities relating to quality patient care, decision making, problem solving and all leadership functions. Stimulates a collaborative multidisciplinary team approach in the continuous improvement of quality, safety, and service for patients. Ensures regulatory compliance of departments within scope. Has a matrix reporting relationship to the Department of Medicine (DEM) Administrator and the HFH VP- Patient Care Services/CNO.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership and strategic direction for Emergency Services that is aligned with organizational goals.
  • Maintains a collaborative relationship with other hospital departments.
  • Works closely with the DEM Vice Chair of Operations to assure the quality of care in the ED meets or exceeds the standard.
  • Develops a highly accountable team.
  • Keeps abreast of health care trends and brings new ideas and innovation to the departments.
  • Participates and contributes to assigned committees, teams, task forces, including community service, if applicable.
  • Directs and provides leadership in financial matters regarding budgeting and cost control and revenue generation.
  • Provides leadership and direction for improving patient/customer satisfaction.
  • Oversees clinical services in all areas of assignment to promote interdisciplinary team development and movement along the continuum.
  • Maintains a level of organization to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Develops new or improved methods of service that have a positive impact for Henry Ford Health System.
  • Establishes, monitors, and is accountable for unit productivity in relation to benchmarks and ensures appropriate staffing at all times to meet the needs of the patients.
  • Establishes and maintains excellent physician relationships and works to resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Ensures team leaders and staff have the appropriate qualifications, orientation and competency and works to continually assist in their development.
  • Actively participates in Performance Improvement/Outcome Management activities for high reliability.
  • Oversees clinical services in all areas of assignment to promote interdisciplinary team development and movement along the continuum.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Master’s degree in Nursing, Business Management or other related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical leadership experience.
  • Previous leadership experience in an acute hospital Emergency Department (ED) setting at the manager or Director level preferred.
  • Level I or Level II Trauma Center experience preferred, but not required.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Current license to practice in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current BLS/ACLS required.
  • TNCC, ENPC certification preferred.
  • Certifications as a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Nurse Executive (NE-BC or NEA-BC), or Nurse Leader (CNML or CNL) are a plus.
