DutiesSummary

The Advanced DRT (CT) performs computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body with and without the use of contrast material. He/she explains the procedure to each patient and gives instructions for successful completion of the exam, confers with the radiologist on establishing requirements of non-standard procedures, assists in determining proper CT protocols for various disease processes, and assists in performing needle biopsies and other invasive procedures.

• The Advanced DRT (CT) will be responsible for:-Maintaining patient records and preparing the administration of oral and intravenous contrast media; Performing 3-dimensional reconstructions of CT images and sending the acquired information to PACS; PACS and its interface with the CT system is necessary; Independently performing head and body Computerized Axial Tomography (CT) scans using standard and non-standard procedures to include CT Angiography and Cardiac studies; Ensuring all supplies are available to complete requested examinations;-Determining technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of CT scanning; Accurately administering oral, rectal and injectable contrast material according to established sterile techniques and procedures to include performing all IV injections; Monitoring patient condition as required and taking appropriate action in emergent situations and alerts the Radiologist for assistance and guidance; Advising the Radiologists or referring physicians of examination results and notifies them of scans requiring their immediate attention;-Performing daily calibrations on the CT scanner; Ensuring cleanliness of the CT room, as well as stocking CT supplies and linen; Inputting data into the computer to ensure proper registration, patient date, and workload statistics; Maintaining permanent storage of scans on optical disks and transporting all lab work with proper documentation to the lab area;-Scheduling patients for examinations by maintaining the flexibility to rearrange the schedule to accommodate critically ill and emergency patients; Assisting the Radiologist and Supervisor DRT (CT) Assistant Chief with developing new protocols and updating previous/outdated protocols to maintain state-of-the-art technology; and-Performing IV injections using proper sterile techniques; Assisting the Radiologists with using sterile operating room procedures i.e. (scrub in) during all invasive procedures; Utilizing appropriate radiation protection safety standards devices and techniques according to policy; CT Technologist may be required to perform other duties common to the Radiology Service as assigned by administration.

  • Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R) with advanced certification in Computed Tomography (CT). YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR ARRT CERTIFICATION.
  • Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS.
  Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic certification requirements.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).   The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-09. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-07 to GS-09.

  Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.   Grade Determinations: At the GS-09 level, you must have one full year of experience at the GS-08 level or equivalent directly related to the Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (CT) position. Examples of specialized experience include: 1) Experience performing computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest and body with and without contrast materials; 2) Experience ensuring all necessary preparations and supplies are available to complete examinations and explaining examinations to patients; and 3) Experience in determining technical factors to product and satisfy requirements of CT scanning. At this grade level, employees are fully functional as an Advanced DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
  i. *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures
  .ii. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
  iii. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
  iv. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
  v. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.vi. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
