Eaton’s Fuel & Motion Control Systems division, a part of our Aerospace group, is currently seeking a Design Engineer to join our team. This position is based at our Grand Rapids, MI office.
Position Overview:
The Design Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager at the Grand Rapids facility within the Fuel and Motion Control (FMC) Division of Eaton Aerospace.
The candidate selected for the role will perform modeling, packaging, detailing, and mechanical stack up tolerance analysis for electro-mechanical actuators and electrical controllers.
The incumbent will monitor activities in support of department change order on-time delivery and quality while also assisting in managing design workload between US and international designers and engineers for new program development, sustaining engineering, and other design data to be stored in the PLM system.
You will drive process improvements to quality and efficiency in the organization regarding configuration management and PLM processes.

In this function you will:
- Create robust 3D models of complex machined components with input from project/senior engineers utilizing Pro Engineer Wildfire 5.0 or higher. Should be familiar with advanced modeling tools such as swept blends, section sweeps, etc.
- Generate layouts, drawings and sketches for fabrication of Engineering Development, prototypes, and components for testing.
- Complete detail drawing packages for new products utilizing applicable government standards and industry standards, primarily ANSI Y14.5M-1994, MIL-STD-100, and Eaton Design Engineering Standards Manual.
- Perform GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and basic engineering analysis to support DFM, DFA, DTC, FEA and weight controls on new designs.
- Update current production drawing packages and 3D CAD models by writing and incorporating Engineering Change Orders (ECO’s) utilizing manual drawing techniques as well as CAD. Submit revised CAD data to the Enovia CAD database and release for production.
- Support Mechanical, Test, and Electrical Design groups in generating drawings and sketches for fabrication of Engineering Development, prototypes, and components for testing.
- Work with designers at global locations licensing drawings, documents through ENOVIA database.
- Submit work packages using engineering work-orders, drawing/ECO markups. Review work performed, route for signature loops with engineering and release into ENOVIA database.
- Import and export 3D models that are not native to Pro Engineer into existing designs as well as provide customers with Eaton’s 3D models that are compatible with other CAD software systems such as Catia.
- Possess capability to interpret complex design requirements from 2D sketches prepared by project/senior engineers
- Develop, maintain, and enforce configuration management and data management plans, policies, standards, directives, and procedures ensuring product configuration integrity are met for engineering documents, drawings, firmware, and software through all product lifecycle phases.
- Utilize Eaton’s standard drawing/modeling templates when creating new drawings or models. Must have ability to create and maintain drawing formats, templates, and symbols.
- Complete Bill-of-Materials within PLM to convey product requirements to organization.

QualificationsRequired (Basic) Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited university
- Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future
- This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
- No relocation benefit is being offered for this position. Only candidates within a 50-mile radius of Grand Rapids, MI will be considered. Active Duty Military Service member candidates are exempt from the geographical area limitation.
Preferred qualifications:
- Knowledge of geometry creation methods.
- Basic to advanced understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Basic understanding of standard aerospace manufacturing processes and ability to design for manufacturability.
- Understanding of ASME Y14 standards.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in the design of mechanical components.
- Minimum one (1) year of experience with 3D modelling software (preferably Pro Engineer)
- Basic understanding of aerospace manufacturing processes, tolerances and materials.
- Utilize “Design for Manufacturing” skills early and often in the design process.
Position Criteria:
- Working knowledge of mechanical design principles
- Strong product design ability (Both new product & product modification)
- Advanced knowledge in engineering report and specification writing
- In-depth knowledge of mechanics of materials, statics, and dynamics
- Ability to make recommendations on product designs, strongly influence product costs, and capital investments.
- Ability to lead technical discussions and presentations for internal and external customers, including design reviews, non-advocate reviews and technical coordination meetings.
- Thorough knowledge of product applications, product design techniques, engineering processes, and engineering standards.
