Overview: Princeton University is seeking a Dean of the Graduate School for a full-time appointment. Princeton University offers advanced degrees spanning the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering. Doctoral education available in all disciplines emphasizes original and independent scholarship, while master's degree programs in architecture, engineering, finance, public affairs and public policy prepare candidates for careers in public life and professional practice. The School enrolls more than 2,700 Ph.D. students and 300 master’s degree students who represent diverse domestic and international backgrounds.Responsibilities: The Dean of the Graduate School:

  • Provides leadership in graduate academic and co-curricular program development, serves as an advocate for graduate education within the University community, and represents Princeton University to the broader community of graduate education.
  • Chairs the Faculty Committee on the Graduate School, which includes faculty Directors of Graduate Studies from all graduate programs at the University, and oversees its four subcommittees: policy; curriculum; fellowships; and student life and discipline.
  • Oversees the annual admission process for all 42 departments and programs at the University that admit graduate students, as well as the budget that supports graduate students’ ongoing enrollment and financial support.
  • Supervises five senior staff members and manages a total staff of 36 within the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School who work in the areas of admission; academic affairs and degree certification; finance and pay; student life and community standards; access, diversity, and inclusion; professional development and the gradFUTURES initiative; and student systems, records, and reporting.
  • Reports to the Provost and, with the other senior academic deans, is a member of the Academic Planning Group, which has responsibility for initiating, approving and recommending to the faculty, the President, and the Board of Trustees major university-wide academic initiatives.
  • Serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet, providing administrative updates on the Graduate School to the President and the Board of Trustees.
  • Develops, evaluates and reviews academic support programs and student services and initiatives with the goal of ensuring that Princeton’s graduate students complete their degrees on time and in an environment supportive of their success, and that they are prepared to apply their graduate training to a diverse range of professional paths.
  • Collaborates with the Dean of the College, the Vice President for Campus Life, the Vice President for University Services, and other members of the President’s Cabinet to ensure that offices they oversee that provide student services to graduate students are doing so in a robust, informed, and integrated way.
  • Works with other senior academic deans and campus leaders to devise creative approaches to diversifying student populations and ensuring that graduate students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the Graduate School participate fully and successfully in academic programs and campus life.
  • Cultivates a campus environment that is responsive to graduate student needs and values their input, in particular through the Graduate Student Government and its Executive Board.
  • Works with University Advancement to strengthen relationships with alumni of the Graduate School and to promote a vibrant intellectual community that connects current graduate students with the global alumni body.
Qualifications: Candidates should possess a distinguished record of scholarly accomplishments and effectiveness in supervising doctoral candidates. Qualifications for appointment to the tenured faculty in one of the disciplines within the institution are required. In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated effectiveness in leadership, strategic planning, management, and staff supervision, as well as experience with student programs and a commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. The successful candidate will also have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
