UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW. Information Management (IM) within UW-IT provides University-wide leadership in the development and management of UW’s major administrative business systems, including Finance, Human Resources/Payroll, Advancement and Facilities. This division is also responsible for the UW Enterprise Data Warehouse and business intelligence tools that provide information for decision making.

The Enterprise Data Integration unit (EDI) within IM provides consistent and reliable architectures, guidelines, standards, tools, and services for analysis, design, integration, management and delivery of institutional data. Within EDI, the Enterprise Data Platform (EDP) group manages, develops and maintains institutional data resources in order to provide useful, timely, and reliable information to the UW. The EDP brings together major University business systems and those who consume from them. The EDP includes the University’s Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) and Enterprise Web Services (EWS). Enhancing and expanding the EDW and EWS provides the opportunity to push technical boundaries while delivering enormous value to the UW.

The EDW seeks a Database Developer with strong SQL skills who innovates, designs, executes, and supports the unit's data projects.

The Database Developer is responsible for:

  • Delivering data for a variety of data integration projects

  • Producing and testing code for ETL frameworks

  • Performance tuning SQL queries and databases

  • Streamlining and automating operations

  • Ensuring data assets are well managed

  • Maintenance and production support activities

    Based on candidate skills this position may also contribute to and support infrastructure projects, large-scale database migrations, cloud service design and implementation, data security projects, and web development.

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Management, Engineering or related field or experience.

  • Four years’ experience in two or more of the following:

  • ETL processing design, planning, testing, and production implementations.

  • Expert level capabilities in Transact-SQL, stored procedure development, query optimization, and tuning.

  • Automating SQL Server with PowerShell.

  • Data warehousing experience.

  • Experience developing and owning solutions in large scale, complex enterprise environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver creative solutions to meet business needs.

  • Enthusiasm for innovating.

  • Tenacity towards investigating and resolving issues.

  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.

  • Strong problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    DESIRED:

  • Experience with managing databases in source control in multi-developer environments.

  • Familiarity with Continuous Integration (CI) and Delivery (CD).

  • Working knowledge of NET, JQuery, Javascript, JSON, or XML

  • Comfortable with Powershell in a complex, enterprise environment. Bonus if familiar with Pester or other Powershell unit testing framework

  • Advanced practical experience with data warehouse industry standards and patterns.

  • Familiar with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure) and their client libraries (AWS Tools for PowerShell, Azure management cmdlets).

  • Experience with ETL toolsets such as SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), WhereScape Red, Talend, or Penopto.

  • Familiarity with BI tools, such as Power BI, Analysis Services (SSAS), Reporting Services (SSRS) or Tableau Server.

  • Knowledge of agile software development lifecycle methods and processes.

  • Ability to train, mentor, and guide others to learn complex technical skills.

  • Experience in a major research university setting.
