Data Scientist – Subject Matter Expert (SME) Details

Provide support to the 45 Test Squadron at Eglin AFB, FL. This support includes:

  • Deliver technical leadership and frequently serve as the technical advisor for Data Science based capabilities to enhance system test and evaluation.
  • Organize and interpret data to inform DOD decision makers, turn data into actionable knowledge; drive successful operations and shape organization technology and resource investments.
  • Provide expertise in data mining/data warehousing/data visualization techniques. Conduct research and explore specific application areas, and recommend solutions for Data Science implementation across all test portfolios targeted at solving problems.
  • Model complex institutional problems, develop insights and identify opportunities using statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualization techniques.
  • Support design and execution of test and evaluation of software intensive systems. Support development test objectives/criteria, test phase entry/exit criteria, analysis of design constraints, functional capabilities, and metrics.
  • Build advanced capabilities, conduct research and development, and develop solutions to our customers most complex and challenging data problems.
  • Support senior engineers when interacting with System Program Offices, other military services, and development contractors.

Required Skills

Required Experience
One of the following combinations is required:
Master’s Degree in a technical discipline and a minimum of 10 years of technical experience -OR- Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline and 18 years of technical experience –OR- HS Diploma or Equivalent and 22 years of technical experience.
  • Advanced math skills (linear algebra, statistics –Bayesian and Frequentist methods, set theory, dynamic programming, discrete math, systems theory, Multivariate Methods, Modeling in Regression).
  • Demonstrable experience with machine learning and data science techniques and mathematical approaches.
  • Data Science expertise and experience with algorithm development and data structures in common programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL, JAVA, C#, Julia) and tools (e.g., Jupyter Notebooks, TensorFlow, Keras) and cloud-based environments (e.g., AWS or Azure, to include cloud-native or cloud API-based interfaces).
  • Familiarity with ML libraries, and the algorithmic methods available, and when/how to apply the appropriate method given the objective.
  • Extensive analytics or big data analysis experience, experience with exploratory data analysis on large data sets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on a team and lead/direct the work of others.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills.
  • Proficiency in the use and integration of MS Office applications.
  • Travel within continental US.
  • US Citizenship required; must be able to obtain/maintain Top Secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of developmental test and evaluation processes, specifically - acquisition program development and detailed knowledge of Air Force C2 test methodologies including AFI 99-103. Familiarity with Design of Experiments.
  • PhD in computer science, math, statistics, or related STEM discipline.
  • Ability to interface with prime contractors developing the system under test (SUT) regarding test objectives, schedules, budgets, and methods of test.
