Would you enjoy supporting biomedical science working with a diverse group of people focused on solving science challenges? Would you enjoy maintaining and supporting the use of laboratories and some of their instrumentation in a world-leading scientific research environment? The Cryo-EM and Bioimaging Division within the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource Directorate at SLAC is seeking a Life Science Research Professional (LSRP) to help with operating biochemical laboratories and a range of laboratory instruments that are used in support of cryo-electron microscopy facilities, and to perform specific technical work. The facility is staffed by a team, including this position that is responsible for research operations and training and assisting scientific users, postdoctoral scholars and graduate students that perform single particle and tomography experiments, with application to a wide range of biomedical and medical topics. There is strong emphasis on high-level service orientation, meeting user needs, varied levels of communication, high organizational skills, and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Support research laboratories, maintain inventory of the required laboratory infrastructure, chemicals, gases, buffers, tissue culture media, microscope grids, general supplies; track and address any deficiencies, perform needed procurement, including for hazardous materials.
  • Maintain the proper functioning of all grid and specimen preparation devices, optical microscopes, sample freezers, sample storage dewars, ultra-high performance water purifiers, etc. and provide rapid assistance in response to requests. Arrange for external repair service as needed.
  • Be proficient in cryo-specimen plunge freeze preparation and teach/assist external and internal users, postdoctoral scholars and graduate students in these techniques.
  • Organize and keep inventories of scientific samples for users and staff; manage sample storage; includes tracking biohazard level.
  • Assist with handling the processes for shipping and receiving of user samples between the user institutions and SLAC, while ensuring that transportation requirements are met.
  • Liaise with external and internal users, laboratory and safety managers, administrative and scientific staff.
  • May perform data collection responsibilities.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

Other general research and lab coordination responsibilities may include:

  • Plan and perform experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory. Interpret and perform basic analyses of results.
  • Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with staff.
  • Maintain detailed records of activities.
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed.
  • Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, biophysics, biochemistry, chemistry or bioengineering, or related scientific field, or a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master data entry and queries using existing systems.
  • Strong communications skills and ability to interact effectively with a range of people at a varied level of experience, as well as with external entities.
  • Ability to work independently in a laboratory environment, as well as ability to work productively in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

Preferred requirements include:

  • Hands-on experience from work in a laboratory that is focused on optical microscopy, electron microscopy, or cryo-electron microscopy.
