Position Summary


Through the guidance and direction provided by the department supervisor or manager, the Crude Oil Assay Distillation Technician performs laboratory distillations on petroleum crude oil, crude condensate and various petroleum hydrocarbon mixtures and solvents per test methods ASTM D2892 and ASTM D5236. In addition the Crude Assay Distillation Technician is responsible for performing various bulk property type analyses on petroleum crude oil and the fractions thereof as are produced by the distillation process to determine chemical and physical characteristics.


Product types may include but are not limited to:

Crude oil, LPG, light and middle distillates, gas oils, & residual tower bottoms.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working as part of a dynamic team of laboratory staff in a fast pace, high test count, 24/7 production style environment while ensuring professionalism at all times.
  • Responsible for proactively promoting, supporting and ensuring compliance to all applicable safety and quality standards
  • Responsible for performing and completing all assigned Laboratory analyses in accordance with the analytical standards and procedures used in the laboratory in an independent and proficient manner to include the applicable validation and recording of results obtained from individual tests as performed.
  • Responsible for the calibration, set up, adjustment and correct operation of various laboratory instruments and equipment in accordance with applicable standards and technical operation manuals.
  • Responsible for performing quality assurance & quality control testing as required for each instrument or test method as are applicable in accordance with quality management practices.
  • Responsible for conducting investigations of questionable test results and test result discrepancies to proactively assist in the development of the required corrective actions to resolve issues discovered.
  • Responsible for preparing chemical solutions and standards according to standard procedures as required.
  • Responsible for monitoring job/project progress across varying analytical test schedules and workflows; to routinely perform concurrent analyses, to multi-task as needed to expedite testing and meet project deadlines.
  • Assist, contribute and participate in all training efforts as required.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications


Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Beneficial: 1-2 years chemical engineering college education
  • (1) Years experience in a production working laboratory is preferred.
  • (1) Years direct experience in crude oil assay distillation per ASTM D2892 and ASTM D5236.
  • Position includes overtime, a rotating schedule including weekends, holidays and may include additional responsibilities during off hours. Additional adjustments to work schedule may apply in the form of “on-call” off hours work requirements depending on workload variables.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions as may be furnished in oral, written, diagram, electronic or schedule form.
  • Understands and is able to read and interpolate applicable data and tables, interpret applicable graphs and control charts, complete laboratory raw data sheets, and is able to compute rates, ratio, percent and material quantities (linear, volumetric, weight, etc.).
  • Able to work well under pressure and in a team environment.
  • Possess working proficiency of ASTM D4052, D5002, D97, D5853, UOP 163, D4294
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills and is able to communicate effectively with persons of diverse personalities and backgrounds and to exercise good judgment, common sense and diplomacy in so doing.
  • Acts accordingly to the SGS standards of ethics and integrity.
  • Must be able to work with all chemicals, petrochemicals and petroleum products.

Additional Experience Preferred

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel) and other office applications.
  • Ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources and evaluate relevance as pertains to crude assay trending properties.
  • Possess working proficiency of test methods ASTM D4052, D5002, D97, D5853, UOP 163, D4294
