General Responsibilities:

Assists the Director of Instruction, principals, and teachers in ensuring that the elementary, middle, and secondary mathematics curriculum offers rich educational experiences, effective instructional resources and assessments, and the use of effective teaching strategies.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists the Director of Instruction with the alignment of state standards into school-level mathematics instructional programs.
  • Remain current with all Virginia Department of Education expectations and requirements related to mathematics instruction such as attending events, meetings, conferences, etc.
  • Supports mathematics curriculum writing teams and coaches in the design of course organizers, scope and sequence of units of instruction, pacing guides, and the development of end-of-unit Curriculum writing will incorporate vertical alignment and will consider integration of other contents when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with teachers, coaches, and department leaders/chairs to implement standards-based classrooms to include but not limited to the following: a common framework, language of the standards, performance tasks, analyzing student work, planning for differentiated instruction, implementation of best practice strategies, and development of performance tasks that reflect higher order thinking
  • Coordinates curriculum revisions/realignment of standards to effectively address the incorporation of 21stCentury Learning Skills and Virginia Profile of a Graduate.
  • Facilitates textbook/resource adoption processes for mathematics.
  • Facilitates the correlation of the Mathematics Standards of Learning with K-12 mathematics textbooks, ancillary materials, and assessments.
  • Assists the high school with the development of Independent Studies for mathematics as part of the alternative paths to attaining standard units of credit.
  • Supports the process of formative and summative mathematics assessments and provides guidance and assistance to principals, coaches and lead mathematics teachers on analyzing and utilizing data to improve achievement results of students.
  • Facilitates the development of end-of-unit assessments to include traditional multiple-choice, performance based assessment, and project based learning.
  • Assists in the development of Local Alternative Assessments as approved and directed by the Virginia Department of Education.
  • Assists the Director of Assessment and Accountability in disseminating information to mathematics teachers related to Standards of Learning assessment changes and requirements.
  • Assists the Director of Assessment and Accountability with analyzing and disseminating data related to mathematics formative and summative assessments.
  • Works with the Director of Instruction, Coordinator of Professional Learning, principals, and coaches to provide professional development for mathematics teachers focused on the use of research-based instructional strategies to improve student achievement and engagement in learning.
  • Supports the Learning Focused Schools (LFS) instructional framework.
  • Conducts meetings with mathematics teachers and coaches to examine student work and increase the rigor of instruction through improvement of units/lessons to ensure that students have instruction that embeds higher level thinking skills and real-world application/connections.
  • Conducts model lessons for teachers using research based best practices.
  • Supports teachers in establishing a blended learning environment.
  • Shares knowledge and strategies for ESOL and SPED students.
  • Assists principals, teachers, and coaches in designing acceleration and/or intervention strategies to support the learning needs of students. This includes assisting in the evaluation of materials for this purpose.
  • Provides support to mentors and all teachers, particularly those in year 1,2, or 3 of teaching.
  • Visits classrooms regularly and provides instructional feedback to staff.
  • Participates in professional development to become a division-wide Learning Focused Schools (LFS) trainer and division-wide Project Based Learning (PBL) trainer.
  • Positively represents MCPS on the Region IV mathematics joint meetings.
  • Keeps informed about current trends and practices in curriculum through professional reading, participation in local, state, and national meetings, and collaboration with VDOE and individuals from other divisions.
  • Maintains active membership in the following professional organizations at a minimum: ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development), VCTM (Virginia Council of Teachers of Math, (BVCTM) Battlefields of Northern Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
  • Assists the Director of Instruction in developing a budget for mathematics instruction.
  • Obtains quotes, works with vendors, and creates and submits purchase orders for mathematics purchases.
  • Participates with K-12 mathematics teacher teams and coaches to further develop a collaborative approach to teaching and learning.
  • Collaborates with the division instructional team.
  • Assists principals, teachers, and coaches with guest speakers, regional/state/national contests and competitions, field trips, summer camps, etc. related to mathematics.
  • Assists teacher teams, principals with community connections and involvement in their schools.
  • Works closely with the business community and the PK-12 Science Instructional, Curriculum, & Assessment Specialist to support STEM initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Instruction and/or the Director of Assessment and Accountability.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong foundational knowledge in mathematics content.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Virginia Standards of Learning for mathematics.
  • A comprehensive understanding of formative/summative assessment.
  • An ability to assist administrators, teachers, and coaches in analyzing and interpreting data as it pertains to setting improvement goals and targets.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with administrators, teachers, and coaches to meet established goals.
  • Ability to lead groups of teachers and coaches through curriculum design/alignment and the design and development of assessments.
  • Strong technology skills.
Requisite Education and Experience:
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Teaching License.
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Mathematics endorsement.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five years of successful teaching experience in mathematics required.
    • Both general mathematics courses and advanced level courses preferred.
Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.

Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
