Campus Recreation: Coordinator, Rec Sports

Boise State University invites interested applicants for the position of Coordinator of Rec Sports to become a part of the Campus Recreation team as we build an engaged community that encourages healthy, active people and enhances student success.



Job Summary/Basic Function:

Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Student Recreation Center including Student Staff Supervision, Facility Operations, Facility Scheduling and Event Management, as well as Risk Management and Security.

You will have the opportunity to:

Oversee the development and administration of a comprehensive intramural sports program and assist with the oversight of the club sports program. Responsibilities include providing effective day-to-day supervision of sport activities, scheduling of leagues and tournaments, and hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of student employees. Additionally, the Coordinator of Rec Sports will provide leadership and support for the Summer Youth Sports Program.



Level Scope:

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.



Essential Functions:

Staff Supervision

  • Directly responsible for the hiring, scheduling, training, performance evaluations, and day-to-day supervision of approximately twenty (20) Intramural Sport Officials, eight (8) Intramural Supervisors, and one (1) Graduate Assistant of Intramural Sports. Provide daily, hands-on instruction and development opportunities for student staff through on-going training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
  • Create and monitor the When to Work (W2W) schedule, review employee shift trades, and approve employee time off requests. Review the W2W schedule weekly to ensure adequate staffing levels for the day-to-day operations of the Rec Sports Program as well as all special events.
  • Approve weekly payroll for Intramural Sport officials, Intramural Supervisors, and Graduate Assistant and monitor reported time for accuracy.
  • Assist with hiring, scheduling, training, and day-to-day supervision of summer camp staff.
  • Approve weekly payroll for the Intramural Sports Program and monitor reported time for accuracy

Staff Development

  • Develop, coordinate, and lead student development opportunities that focus on the growth and development of student employability skillsets.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate the Intramural Sports team on methods to improve the customer experience and identify opportunities to improve the delivery of our customer service.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate the Intramural Sports staff on methods and best practices to officiate and control games, ensure participants understand and comply with game rules, and make game calls with confidence and knowledge of league rules.
  • Develop and coordinate staff appreciation initiatives in order to retain student employees and build team morale.

Fiscal Management

  • Budget, track, and reconcile all expenses related to the Intramural Sports Program on a monthly basis.
  • Monitor and maintain google drive accounts for the Club Sport Program.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting process for Campus Recreation. This includes developing, forecasting, and reporting on revenues and expenses related to your administrative area.
  • Total budgetary oversight is $150,000 within a $3 million budget.

Risk Management

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe environment for individuals who participate in Campus Recreation facilities, programs, and services as well as staff members who deliver these student-centered experiences.
  • Review and analyze accident and incident reports for concerning patterns, determine and implement solutions that impact multiple work teams within the department to remedy and/or prevent reoccurrence.
  • Provide ongoing risk management training for the Intramural Sports staff in order to minimize risk, reduce loss, and ensure continuity in Departmental business practices across all areas.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all student staff members are CPR/First Aid/AED Certified and certifications are on-file and up to date.
  • Conduct outdoor space inspections, risk management audits, and monitor equipment inventory to minimize loss.
  • Serve as the Administrator On-Call on a rotational basis.

Intramural Sports

  • Directly oversee the day-to-day operations of intramural sport activities, including scheduling of leagues, officials and training sessions for officials and team managers.
  • Plan program offerings and design activities intended to meet guidelines set by supervisor on program mix, participation objectives, and financial parameters.
  • Administer and further develop team training program for novice officials of multiple sports.
  • Ensure the highest possible level of customer service in order to provide exceptional experiences.
  • Research and recommend appropriate equipment purchases for maintenance and growth of the intramural and club sports program.
  • Inventory and maintain all equipment and supplies to ensure quality, safety and security.

Club Sports

  • Supervise, direct, and advise approximately ten (10) Club Sports including the organization officers, coaches, and advisors.
  • Train and develop club members, officers and coaches through detailed pre-season orientations and regular interactions.
  • Act as the advisor to the Club Sport Council.
  • Assist with club sports travel including verifying travel rosters, hotel accommodations, transportation, tournament registration, adequate funding, and traveling safety precautions.

Summer Youth Sports Programs

  • Serve as the Program Coordinator for the summer youth sports camp.
  • Responsible for the direct supervision of the day-to-day camp operations including opening and closing of buildings, participant check-in/out process, emergency management, and communication with families (during the summer only).
  • Responsible for the hiring, scheduling, and training of camp instructors.
  • Assist with the implementation of camp structure and curriculum

5% of Duties include Department and Leadership Support

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Possess a basic knowledge of student development methods and practices, facility operations and management, facility scheduling and event management, risk management and safety, and budgeting.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Demonstrated strong conflict management skills and the ability to adjudicate conflict.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant professional experience.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Prefer Master’s Degree in Recreation, Sport Management, Athletic Administration, Business Administration, Kinesiology, or related field
  • Direct personnel management experience of student employee teams: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining
  • Budget development and budget management experience
  • Two years work experience managing operations of an Intramural Sport Program in higher education
  • Two years work experience with supervising, advising, or directing Club Sport Programs
  • Two years work experience in supervising the day-to-day operations of youth summer camps.
  • Experience in oral and written communication such as teaching:
    • Developing/delivering presentation content/materials; writing reports, proposals, professional correspondence, manuals, etc.
  • Experience with league management software (e.g. IM Leagues or FusionIM)
  • Experience with facility management software (e.g. Connect 2 Concepts or comparable)
  • Experience programming or service delivery for diverse community populations
