Controller-Director of Finance - Area Hotels Details

The Area Controller is responsible for the oversight and direction of the accounting functions at two hotels. Direction of total accounting function to include management of staff, development, administration of accounting procedures, timely and accurate production of financial statements and records.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Directs the production and maintenance of accounting records for payables, receivables, payroll and financial areas.
  • Oversees and ensures the effective performance of all accounting departments, including receivables, payables, revenue, payroll, and financial.
  • Closely monitoring the financial performance of all departments to ensure that they are kept in line with budget; and providing solutions to improve problem areas and assisting in implementing corrective measures.
  • Effectively analyzes existing accounting procedures and ensures all systems and procedures are efficient and produce the desired results.
  • Implements and adheres to generally accepted accounting principles within the department.
  • Creates and maintains accounting safeguards and protocols to ensure confidentiality and safety of accounting records and monetary resources.
  • Produces and/or oversees the production of financial reports and statement for internal and external uses.
  • Directs and coordinates the annual budget process for both financial and capital projections.
  • Provides necessary financial projections required for property and franchise development.
  • Develops and oversees the implementation and use of accounting audits at the hotel level to ensure required data, procedures and records are reviewed.
  • Provides operational analysis and information to President and senior management for effective and useful decision-making.
  • Communicates with senior management, department heads and managers to ensure problems are avoided/resolved, communications lines kept open and ideas generated.
  • Create year-over-year improvement in associate satisfaction scores throughout the division including maintaining low turnover and high promotion-from-within ratings.
  • Oversee development of team within division for succession planning.
  • Helps to develop and execute hotel strategy as a member of the Executive Committee.
  • Selects and maintains an effective and quality staff.
  • Oversee counseling of associates ensuring fairness and a timely delivery to include verbal communications, preparation of written documentation for administration with associate(s) along and issuance of performance appraisals.
  • Ensures harmonious associate relations through effective communication, motivation and leadership.
  • Follow all Marcus Hotels and Resorts policies and procedures, Marriott Standards, and Information Protection procedures.
  • Perform all other related duties and special projects as requested and/or assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous management-level accounting experience, preferably at least 2-4 years and within a multi-site, high-volume hospitality industry company. Demonstrated ability to achieve desired results.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required, four-year accounting degree in accounting, business administration, or finance. CPA designation desired.
  • Superior leadership and management skills.
  • Strong analysis and problem-identification/resolution skills.
  • Ability to work required hours.
  • Advance computer applications knowledge.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Basic mathematical skills that allow for calculation of figures.
  • Ability to effectively handle guest and employee concerns in a friendly and positive manner. This involves listening to the nature of concern, demonstrating empathy with the customer and providing positive and proactive solutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills to include the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English Language.
  • Ability to sit, stand and move throughout to perform essential job functions.
  • High degree of accuracy and detail orientation.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required; knowledge of Marriott or Hilton systems is preferred.
  • Must be able to represent the company in a professional, well-groomed and courteous manner.
