Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles (Advancing Justice-LA) is one of the nation’s largest legal and civil rights organizations focused on serving Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs).

Founded in 1983 as the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, Advancing Justice-LA serves more than 15,000 individuals and organizations every year. Through direct services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and organizational capacity building, Advancing Justice-LA focuses on the most vulnerable members of AANHPI communities while building a strong voice for civil rights and social justice.

Advancing Justice-LA is based in downtown Los Angeles, with additional offices in Orange County and Sacramento.

Position Summary

The Community Relations Associate (Associate) is a liaison between Advancing Justice-LA and AANHPI individuals and partner organizations regarding the fight against Asian discrimination. Under the supervision of the Communications Director, the Associate will contribute to the planning and execution of a campaign designed to inform and offer legal services to the most vulnerable multilingual members of their housing and civil rights. With a specific focus on Covid-19 related Asian racism, the Associate will help facilitate grassroots outreach in tandem with the Communications Associate and the Anti-Discrimination Victim Advocate Associate. Together, they will plan and execute virtual meetings/ clinics/ workshops, live social media sessions and as appropriate, traditional in-person events. The Community Relations Associate will assist with the creation of culturally appropriate, in-language outreach methods such as flyers, email campaigns, social media, advertising and partnerships. The Associate will help facilitate the use these tools to reach limited English proficient members of the AANHPI communities. As a member of the Communications team, the Associate also coordinates ethnic media relations for positive news coverage that furthers the goals of the campaign.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in meetings, clinics, workshops and live sessions as in-language representative of Advancing Justice-LA in tandem with the Anti-Discrimination Victim Advocate.
  • Engage in-language with community members’ 1:1 and/or in a group setting to address questions, clarify facts, provide service referrals and support the effort to identify potential clients.
  • Help produce and distribute translated media content such as press releases, advisories, fact sheets, talking points, and electronic communication based on the mainstream materials in partnership with the Communications Associate. Apply best practices for cultural and language differences.
  • Assist with the creation of multi-language digital content (video, photo, graphics, text) for social media channels, website and email. Support with traditional media relations. Apply best practices for cultural and language differences.
  • Support the team effort to identify and engage with appropriate community organizations and opinion-leaders for in-language partnerships.

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or a combination of education and relevant work experience).
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience with in-language AANHPI community relations and outreach or directly relevant role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have business language fluency in Chinese (preferably Mandarin) and/or Vietnamese and/or Korean.
  • Exceptional in-language written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with AANHPI community members and leaders.
  • Strong track record of managing and executing a communications plan, including media relations, branding and marketing, ideally within a social justice organization or non-profit setting.
  • Comfort in pursuing earned ethnic media through proactive relationship building with reporters and editors.
  • Comfort with in using digital communications (website, email, social media).
  • Creative and highly organized approach to work, with proven ability to meet deadlines and perform under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance independence and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a highly collaborative work environment.
  • Sincere commitment to social justice for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities
  • Creative Technology
    • Proficiency in PC and Mac with working knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Analytics and Keynote.
    • Knowledge of social media management systems such as Hootsuite and Sprout Social
    • Knowledge of Canva, Salsa Email Management, Meltwater Media.
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Access to reliable means of transportation.

Working Conditions

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Occasional travel may be required.

Due to the 24/7 nature of news, this job often requires work beyond traditional business hours.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.
