Communications Specialist (Visual Storyteller) Details

Are you a visual storyteller with video, graphic design and motion graphic skills, who wants to tell stories across multiple touchpoints to a variety of audiences? As a visual storyteller, you will play a key role on HOK’s Firm-wide Communications team. You will leverage your creative chops to deliver engaging digital media from concept to completion. You will be responsible for collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, ideating concepts and producing end-to-end multimedia content to support communication campaigns, HOK’s website, social media channels, marketing initiatives and special projects. Additionally, you will create content including video, animation, graphic design, HTML or other assets that will appear across multiple channels. We need your vision. Help us tell HOK’s stories!

  • Provide support for media relations, including responding to media requests and tracking media coverage, as well as the development of effective publicity and marketing materials, e-newsletters, executive messages, internal announcements, award submittals and presentations.
  • Provide content management for HOK’s online presence, including HOK.com, the Life at HOK blog and the firm’s social media network.


Required Skills
  • Collaborates with communication and marketing team members, as well as subject matter experts, to produce engaging visual content that strongly communicates brand narratives, design stories, goals and concepts.
  • Performs full production of multimedia content from concept to final output and archiving. This includes storyboarding, scheduling, directing talent, capturing video and audio, importing media, designing and inserting static or motion graphics, editing, adding music/voiceovers/sound effects, working with writers, adjusting for feedback, encoding and delivering finished projects within given time frames.
  • Produces flat graphics or multimedia assets that promote product and program marketing, awareness and education, customer stories, social engagement, recruitment and other enterprise-wide projects.
  • Contributes to Instagram and other corporate social media accounts.
  • Serves as a liaison between the communications team and project teams to provide direction to photographers/videographers on visual content needs that support telling the project story
  • Works independently and collaborates closely with project stakeholders, including but not limited to:
    • Communications and Marketing
    • Legal/Compliance
    • Human Resources
  • Monitors and stays informed on visual content production and delivery trends.
  • Communicates with outside production vendors or talent as needed.
  • Maintains a positive attitude while managing multiple projects that deliver high-quality assets on time and on budget.


Required Experience

Education Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in video production, advertising, marketing, communications, visual journalism, public relations, graphic design or related field.

Experience Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in concept to delivery art direction, animation and video production.
  • Experience contributing to the creative direction on a variety of campaigns that strongly communicate brand narratives and meet desired goals.
  • Experience with video usage on social, websites and other digital assets.
  • Experience strategizing and producing strong video content using a range of techniques and visual styles.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability Requirements

  • Strong understanding of fundamental design, sense of color, typography and composition.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of cameras, microphones, audio and lighting.
  • High proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, especially Premiere Pro and After Effects.
  • High level of video editing, delivery and compression techniques.
  • Strong knowledge in skillfully operating, maintaining and troubleshooting video, audio and lighting equipment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours when needed.
  • The ability to take a brief, interrogate it and move quickly to build and sell design work that tells compelling stories.
  • The ability to design static and moving images, with some talent as an illustrator.
  • You love to absorb diverse and complex inputs, distill them into a compelling creative idea, and then roll up your sleeves to build out each touchpoint to inspire our audiences.
  • You can push HOK’s brand to have a unique voice while delivering against tactical asks.
  • Experience with the architectural, interiors or design profession is a plus.
  • Experience with3D and VR/AR production is a plus.
  • Experience with podcast production is a plus.
  • Experience with drones is a plus.
