Job SummaryUnder the direction of the Director, Communications and Public Relations, the Communications Assistant helps craft and tell the University’s story and supports disseminating media and information to internal and external audiences across multiple platforms. The Communications Assistant utilizes excellent writing skills, creative thinking, and task management abilities to promote a positive image of the University.
Essential DutiesEssential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research, draft, and proofread news stories, press releases, newsletter items, feature news stories, video scripts, marketing copy, and social media content for the University’s platforms.
- Meeting planning and interfacing with entities (internal and external) to schedule, facilitate and, conduct interviews that support content generation and media opportunities.
- Post approved content to CDU’s platforms including website, social media, newsletters, email alerts, reports, publications, calendars, digital newsrooms, and a range of other media.
- Create and distribute daily, weekly, and monthly newsletters and email broadcasts.
- Research, identify, and contact members of the media in key positions to amplify the CDU story.
- Assist with creation and production of presentations, reports, publications, videos, and other internal/external communications.
- Monitor and update the University’s social media channels.
- Assists with University events including drafting scripts, attendee communications, and supporting the coordination of event production.
- Collect photos and help manage the University’s photo gallery.
- Assist in the design and preparation of CDU marketing and promotional materials as needed.
- Develop University advertisements for submission with event sponsorships.
- Act as liaison to public relations/graphic design/website design consultants or vendors and prepare purchase requisitions or requests for bid.
- Research and compile information relevant to the university academic and research centers to prepare speeches or presentations for CDU President’s Office and other CDU leadership as needed.
- Conduct periodic surveys to assess the relevance of CDU promotional materials and website for its primary target audience.
- Keep a running catalog of CDU stories in the media.
- Create “traffic” reports of traditional media and digital media analytics for internal stakeholders
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required QualificationsEDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s Degree required (preferably in Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or other related fields).
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum two years of related work experience.
Minimum RequirementsKNOWLEDGE/ABILITY/SKILLS:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills overall, a thorough proofreader, and an ability to write for a variety of audiences and platforms.
- Excellent organization, project, and time management skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications –Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, and Excel.
- Adobe Creative Suite, Constant Contact (or MailChimp), Survey Monkey, Canva, experience updating websites, and experience with desktop design are all a plus.
- Ability to work with diverse constituencies.
- Ability to compile data, understand analytics, and prepare reports.

Special Requirements- Overtime may be required to meet deadlines.
- Occasional local travel on behalf of CDU may be required.
