Commodity ManagerThis position is viewed as the subject matter expert and acts as a resource for assigned commodities, specifically Machining, Castings, Sheet Metal, and other related materials.
The primary responsibilities will be to develop and implement sourcing strategies while managing the business relationships with suppliers of these commodities. Direct the activities of the commodity analysts in execution of these sourcing strategies. Lead cross-functional teams in the supplier selection process. Negotiate, execute, and effectively manage supplier agreements. Establish and manage inventory levels throughout the supply chain in a cost efficient manner considering the total cost of acquisition/ownership.
New Products Introduction Responsibilities:- Participates in new product development projects representing assigned commodities.
- Engages existing and potential suppliers early in the design process and works cross functionally to facilitate Design for Manufacture/Design for Assembly improvements during the concept and design phases.
- Recommends existing or potential sources of supply and insure that material is procured only from approved Gleason suppliers.
- Identifies new sources of supply, along with Engineering, for new technologies or processes to be utilized in product development. With the support of Supplier Quality Engineering qualifies new sources for inclusion on the approved supplier list.
- Development of sourcing strategy at prototype and scale up phases inclusive of cost estimates, risk, and quality assessments.
- Coordinates with the projects chief engineer to establish cost targets and to insure agreement on final costs. Joint accountability for achievement of results.
Commodity Management Responsibilities:- Develops and manages the implementation of commodity sourcing strategies. Solicits input from other Gleason facilities to ensure all impacted sites have input and are aligned to the commodity strategy.
- Defines the sourcing process and which suppliers are eligible for business
- Understands and publishes trend analysis of cost drivers for commodities managed.
- Accountability for all aspects of the business relationship with key suppliers.
- Manages, along with Supplier Quality Engineering, supplier performance metrics. For suppliers that do not meet minimum performance standards, actively pursues performance improvement initiatives and ensure these are completed as planned.
- Initiates face-to-face supplier meetings to review performance, new opportunities, cost reductions, etc. Frequency will vary based upon critical nature of supplier or raw material/component/sub-assembly supplied. Documents of record, meeting minutes etc. are to be maintained.
- Identifies and executes continuous productivity, cost and/or business process improvements with suppliers based upon key cost drivers. These improvements are to be documented.
- Participates in and, as required, leads groups within the Supply Chain function on corporate sourcing initiatives.
- Negotiate contracts and supply agreements.
- Develops, recommends and implements risk mitigation strategies for single, sole source or high business risk components and suppliers
- Develops, maintains, and approves changes to the approved supplier list.
- Leads teams in new supplier qualifications when need has been identified. E.g. Outsourcing opportunities, internal capacity constraints, existing supplier replacement etc.
- Serve as the elevation point and assists Buyers/Analysts with difficult supplier management issues.
- Develops professional skills of subordinates, as applicable.
Education & Professional Certifications- Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain or related
- MS/MA/MBA preferred
- APICS certification and/or ISM certification preferred. Considered a strong plus and requirement for advancement.
Skills, Knowledge, Training and Experience- 5-7 years’ experience in the following disciplines; supply chain management, strategic sourcing, general business management, demand or materials management, operational management utilizing ERP systems.
- Specialized training in “lean manufacturing/lean enterprise” concepts a strong plus.
- Must be able to demonstrate aptitude in purchase price cost analyses.
- Must be able to manage inventory levels. Hands-on utilization of MRP.
- Ability to utilize competitive knowledge to determine business strategies and decisions. Internet utilization, electronic business to business experience, negotiation techniques, presentation skills.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills with internal and external customers.
- Must be able to understand and interpret contractual language.
- Critical thinking, decision making, complex problem solving, project management, expert in primary function(s), ability to lead, motivate and develop skills among colleagues.
