The Center for Cerebrovascular Research (CCR), located within the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care, is comprised of a core group of faculty and staff pursuing integrative and interdisciplinary studies of cerebrovascular disease, utilizing the tools of cell biology, animal models, human genetics, epidemiology, and treatment outcomes research. Our main area of focus is vascular malformations of the brain, including arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM), which are an important cause of hemorrhagic stroke in younger persons. We have several National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded clinical research studies involving patient recruitment locally and abroad through collaborations with investigators across the country and internationally.

The Clinical Research Manager supervises staff involved in routine research study coordination. Receives predetermined work assignments that are subject to a moderate level of control and review. Oversees staff in execution of assignments; trains and mentors staff to improve quality and quantity of work.

The Clinical Research Manager will independently coordinate our large clinical research program portfolio and will report directly to the Center Director. This program includes multiple clinical studies and requires advanced-level knowledge and skills. The individual will be responsible for overall management and provide leadership and direct/indirect supervision of the clinical research coordinators and/or support personnel, as well as interface with other research investigators and clinicians to ensure that clinical research commitments are met.

The individual’s duties may include, but will not be limited to supporting the management and coordinating the tasks of multiple clinical research studies; act as intermediary between services and departments while overseeing data and specimen management; manage and report on study results; create, clean, update, and manage databases and comprehensive datasets and reports; coordinate staff work schedules, assist with training of CRCs, and assist the Principal Investigator (PI) with oversight of other research staff; manage Investigator’s protocols in the Committee on Human Research (CHR) online system, as well as renewals and modifications of protocol applications and the implementation of new studies; participate in the review and writing of protocols to ensure institutional review board approval within University compliance; help assure compliance with all relevant regulatory agencies; oversee study data integrity; implement and maintain periodic quality control procedures; interface with departments to obtain UCSF approval prior to study initiation; maintain all regulatory documents; report study progress to investigators; participate in any internal and external audits or reviews of study protocols; collect and process specimens.

Department Description

UCSF’s Department of Anesthesia is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine (SOM) at UCSF with an annual revenue budget of $114 million. The missions of the department include research (basic and clinical), teaching, patient care, and public service. The Department of Anesthesia provides anesthesia service for UCSF’s six integrated facilities: Moffitt/Long Hospital (pre-op, inpatient and outpatient), Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (inpatient and outpatient, including a very active trauma service), San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (inpatient and outpatient), the UCSF/Mt. Zion Medical Center (inpatient and outpatient, including a chronic pain management clinic), the Orthopedic Institute, Mission Bay Hospital (inpatient, outpatient, Obstetrics and Gynecology - OBGYN, and Pediatric), as well as the off-site Mission Bay In vitro fertilization (IVF) clinic.

Authority and accountability for the department rest with the Department Chairman who directs the site Chiefs of Service and mission-based Vice Chairs. The department consist of 237 Faculty members, 171 Staff employees, 21 Fellows, 81 Residents, 15 Non-Faculty Academics, and 8 Post-Docs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area or the equivalent work experience
  • Certification by the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA) or the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP); candidates without the certification shall be required to obtain the certification within 1 year of starting in the position
  • 2 or more years of related work experience
  • Experience with grant application procedures, personnel documentation, contract generation and subcontracting
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Working knowledge of clinical or laboratory research, clinical trial recruitment, eligibility, protocol adherence, quality data submission and adverse event reporting
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities, prioritize projects and meet the demands of a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. Adaptable to quickly changing priorities
  • Demonstrated skills in employee supervision and HR administration. Demonstrated experience in training others, particularly in the field of research
  • Critical thinking skills to evaluate issues and identify a potential solution
  • Clear and concise communicator; good verbal and written communication skills; both
  • Good interpersonal skills, including but not limited to: problem-solving, teamwork development, leadership, mentorship. Interpersonal skills to effectively motivate others. Works well with others to achieve common goals. Ability to cultivate relationships with multiple stakeholders at various levels of administration
  • Effectively uses campus' clinical information and documentation application programs. Proven ability utilizing clinical trial management systems
