What You Will Do: Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age, culture, ethnicity, and specific individual diagnostic needs of the patients served in his/her department. He/she must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group (pediatric, adolescents and/or geriatric patient group, culture and diagnostic specific). Consistently expresses and demonstrates compassion and courtesy for patients. Extends courtesy and support to patient's families/visitors. THIS IS A PER DIEM (0.0 FTE) POSITION WITHOUT ANY BENEFITS LOCATED IN LA PLATA, MD BSN & 3 YEARS NURSING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED *** ENDOCOPY EXPERIENCE IS HIGHLY PREFERRED *** Principal Responsibilities and Tasks The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by the person assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified. 1. Electronic/Paper documentation- Accurately and concisely records patient care along the continuum. Attends required training on electronic documentation. Demonstrates ability to document/enter data correctly in the medical record/EMR verified by chart review. 2. Wound Care- Manages patient care to promote healing and maintain structural integrity of the skin. Performs comprehensive skin assessment and wound care for the patient as required. Identifies risk factors for impaired skin integrity and/or wound impairment. Implements appropriate strategies and/or treatment measures to prevent skin deterioration. Identifies criteria for nutrition and wound care consultative services. 3. Pain Management-Intervenes, alleviates or reduces pain to a level of comfort acceptable to the patient. Assesses the patient for pain on initial admission/visit and during on-going care activities as evidenced by chart audit. Incorporates appropriate interventions to manage pain. Review of documentation. Completes annual competency for pain recognition and pain therapies skill checklist on file. 4. Blood Glucose Monitoring (Accu-check) - Able to accurately perform testing and manage the care of the patient based on results achieved and clinical findings. Attends annual training for review and updates on blood glucose testing and monitoring equipment. Demonstrates proper technique and skills needed for obtaining accurate blood glucose results and documenting findings. Completes annual didactic and/or written testing with results kept on file. Quality monitoring performance is assessed annually and/or as needed at intervals based on performance criteria. 5. Collection of Specimens - Accurately follows procedural guidelines and uses proper technique(s) to obtain bodily specimen collection for laboratory testing. Completes annual didactic and/or written testing with results kept on file. Incorporates proper techniques for patient identification, method for collection of appropriate specimen(s), and documentation. 6. Management of Malignant Hyperthermia- Demonstrates accurate use of assessment skills for patient exhibiting signs and symptoms of Malignant Hyperthermia (MH). Demonstrates measures to maintain thermoregulation to prevent complications. Able to safely care for patient with MH and follow recommended practices for care based on evidence-based guidelines, MD orders, and overall condition of the patient. Able to demonstrate or verbalize proper use of MH cart. Successfully completes UMMS University assignments, which includes a video, post-test, and competency marathon annually. 7. Domestic violence - Demonstrates accurate use of assessment skills for pediatric to geriatric age group to recognize, report, and respond to any signs and symptoms of Domestic violence. Safety should be maintained and executed as per Maryland regulations and policy and procedures for UMROI. Screen thoroughly and Implement appropriate treatment for individual(s) as per guidelines. Documentation review will be used to validate this competency. 8. Moderate Sedation/Analgesia / PACU - Identifies contraindications for IV moderate sedation and/or analgesia. Demonstrates care and monitoring of patient undergoing procedure(s) using Moderate sedation/analgesia and/or post-operative admission. Completes learning module for Moderate Sedation bypass with successfully passing written test annually. Demonstrates/describes appropriate emergency interventions related to complications of moderate sedation/analgesia. Discontinues sedation monitoring according to established criteria (use of Aldrete Recovery Score). Annually should attend in-service and/or seminar to update knowledge of PACU standards. 9. Ventilator /Airway Management- Demonstrate ability to care and manage for a patient requiring ventilator or airway support. This includes knowledge of ventilator settings, Ambu bag, Suctioning via ETT or trach, and tube positioning. Responds appropriately to emergency situations using critical thinking skills. Successful completion of yearly Learning module, written testing and/or competency skills marathon is required. 10. Hemodynamic Monitoring: Arterial Line/Central Venous Catheter/Pacemaker - Demonstrates accurate use of assessment skills for patient requiring Hemodynamic monitoring. Able to independently assist with insertion and/or placement of monitoring device(s). Able to safely care for patient with Hemodynamic device and follow recommended practices for care based on manufacturer guidelines, MD orders, and overall condition of the patient. Able to demonstrate proper set-up for Hemodynamic system using sterile technique. Able to provide interventional care as needed based upon clinical findings and through the use of critical thinking skills. Successfully completes Learning module and/or competency marathon annually. Peer review may also be used to validate this skill. 11. Cardiac Monitoring and Basic Rhythm Interpretation - Determines when Patient's cardiac rhythm requires intervention or additional consult. Able to recognize and respond to emergent situations using ACLS and/or PALS protocols. Maintains an active ACLS / PALS certification. Successfully completes Basic Cardiac Monitoring UMMS University Assignments and posttest along with Competency skills marathon conducted annually. 12. Physical Assessment - Demonstrates ability to accurately assess and/or evaluate the pre-op and post-operative patient. Able to conduct a physiological head to toe systems review and assessment. Incorporates these skills into practice to manage care of patients requiring nausea and vomiting management, neurological care, fluid management and resuscitation, orthopedic care, and cardiac emergencies. Through periodic documentation review and peer review, this skill will be validated. 13. Discharge instruction - Identifies needs of patient and/or family through assessment skills. Implements appropriate communication strategies, conferences with other disciplines, educational resources, and learning styles to prepare patient for discharge. Includes all necessary information based on diagnosis, treatment plan, self-care activities, and MD orders. Able to maintain atmosphere of understanding and participation of patient/family in delivery of instructions. Performs instruction in a timely manner. Documentation review and peer review as well as any customer feedback will be used to validate this skill. 14. Respect for individuals, Customer Service, Teamwork and Collaboration: A. Models excellence in customer service behaviors. Identifies and acts on opportunities to respond to customer requirements. Takes action to prevent potential customer complaints. B. Initiates service recovery processes and completes appropriate documentation in response to customer concerns. C. Leadership, Clinical and/or Technical Skills: A. Exhibits a high level of critical thinking and clinical competency related to the patient population in the area of assignment. B. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the treatment and progress within patient ca. 2. Currently licensed in the State of Maryland as a Registered Nurse with 3 years of Clinical experience. 3. Successful completion of required hospital, nursing and unit orientation, including but not limited to medication certification. 4. Must have a minimum of eighteen (18) months of clinical experience to apply for advancement. 5. Current certification in ACLS for PACU or eligible for completion of course within six (6) months from date of position. Certification in specialty is preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 1. Verbal communication skills may include communicating with an interdisciplinary team, patients, and families. The PER DIEM Cinical Nurse II (PACU) will work independently and provide and coordinate individualized patient care consistent with the mission and values of the University of Maryland Charles Regional Endoscopy Center and in accordance with professional and regulatory standards. Accountable to patients and families for processes and outcomes during an episode of care. Serves as a fully engaged member of the interdisciplinary patient care services team. Participates in cost effective strategies that optimize patient outcomes.
