POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for functioning independently in the following areas: Phlebotomy, Client services and Send-outs. Training for, and services provided by this position are appropriate to patients of all age groups. Associate performs phlebotomy and routine tests in a medical laboratory and maintains records. Work is performed under general supervision.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs analysis of patient samples under the leadership of MLS or MLT as assigned
- Performs special procedures such as difficult venipunctures, Micro plate set ups, preparation of reference lab samples, etc.
- Performs and coordinates clerical tasks around outpatient paperwork filing and billing needs
- Documents QA around accuracy of outpatient orders
- Operates, monitors and maintains basic laboratory equipment needs according to established policies and procedures
- Serves as positive resource for peers and students
- Coordinates the activities related to duties and responsibilities of other Lab Assistants Clinical
- Promotes teamwork
- Communicates problems and needs to the supervisor
- Follows all hospital and departmental policies and procedures
- Collects and receives specimens following established departmental policies and procedures
- Monitors pneumatic tube system and any other route used for specimen entry into the laboratory
- Assumes independent responsibility for all clerical report and specimen intake computer functions in the laboratory
- Follows established procedures for the environment of care and laboratory safety
- Utilizes judicious use of time, supplies, equipment and resources
- Utilizes time management skills to complete work
- Recognizes own limitations and seeks assistance as needed.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills and Attributes
- Must have the ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic
- Accepts responsibility for learning and maintaining knowledge of laboratory practices and procedures
- Accepts responsibility for remaining current on department based competencies, including all regulatory requirements
- Accepts responsibility for remaining current on procedures for the environment of care and laboratory safety
- Accepts responsibility for learning appropriate specimen collection procedures
Education/Skills/Experience:
- High school education / GED is required
- 2 years laboratory experience is required or Bachelor’s degree in Life Science can substitute for the required experience
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification required
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) phlebotomy certification (PBT) is preferred
