GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES – Works to ensure timely and seamless transition of patients through medically appropriate levels of care. Uses skilled interventions and evidence-based practice to collaborate with patients, physicians and multidisciplinary team to achieve quality outcomes.

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO
- Covers patients with surgical drapes to ensure and maintain a sterile operating field, removing patient’s body hair and disinfecting the incision site.
- Determines the availability and inspects sterile and non-sterile surgical equipment, tools and supplies.
- Removes sutures, staples, dressings, catheters and ureteral stents using clean technique.
- Inserts urinary catheters using sterile technique.
- Maintains knowledge of instruments and supplies necessary for all in-office procedures and sets-up procedure room accordingly.
- Assists with the positioning of patient.
- Maintains an unobstructed operating field with surgical retractors, sponges and suctioning and irrigating equipment
- Assists the surgeon with gowning and gloving and passing instruments or supplies.
- Assists with the application of dressings, casts, splints, braces and other devices.
- Provides nursing care and assists in the coordination of that care, including follow-up and referral as necessary.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Performs laboratory testing in accordance with protocols and guidelines.
- Performs EKG’s, vitals, manual blood pressures, spirometry and assists with procedures when needed.
- Performs venipunctures and vaccinations as directed by provider.
- Answers telephone calls in a professional manner; appropriately prioritizing and communicating messages to the provider.
- Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes.
- Appropriately and timely orders testing per provider’s request, obtaining authorizations and pre-certifications, as required for reimbursement.
- Assists patients in obtaining prescription refills.
- Completes all provider assignments/patient follow-up by the end of each day.
- Maintains patient exam rooms, laboratory, patient restroom, and workstations according to standard.
- Maintains current knowledge of medications/vaccinations and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition showing responsibility for their own proficiency in practice and ongoing education.
- Maintains pending test results and coordinates test tracking system to ensure all results are received and reviewed by provider.
- Maintains established office policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with office standards educating patients and families as needed.
- Ensures an adequate stock of supplies assisting in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Obtains Advance Beneficiary Notice for Medicare patients for possible non-covered procedures.
- Reviews Athena workflow dashboard and completes necessary tasks.
- Maintains daily and monthly logs as required (fridge temps, AED, medication expiration dates).
- Provides coverage at other clinics when/if necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
EXPERIENCE
- 2 to 3 years medical experience in a physician’s office or equivalent in combination of training or experience preferred
CERTIFICATE/LICENSE
- Current LPN or RN License within the state of Iowa
- Current BCLS certification
