Chief Engineer, Quantum Systems Division Details

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is searching for qualified subject matter experts in the field of applied quantum sciences to serve as the Chief Engineer for the Quantum Systems Division (QSD) of the Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Laboratory (CIPHER). QSD has approximately 22 full-time researchers including 15 Ph.Ds in physics and related engineering and computer science disciplines.

Core research areas currently include: (1) quantum information systems, with an emphasis on quantum computers based on trapped ions; (2) clocks, sensors, and other devices based on atomic and molecular optical (AMO) phenomenology; and (3) diverse fields of overlapping technical expertise, such as DNA-based data storage and chemical sensing.

The Chief Engineer helps lead and develop new research thrust areas, manage the division IRAD portfolio, and supports projects across the division. Qualified applicants will possess an M.S. and 7+ years of experience or a Ph.D. and 4+ years of experience in the core research areas of the division.

The position is based in Atlanta, GA on Georgia Tech’s main campus. Travel is required for presenting research, developing business, and meeting with sponsors and collaborators.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads and/or contributes to a portfolio of research programs;
  • Lead and/or contributes to white papers and proposal efforts;
  • Supports development of new research thrust areas both technically and by being aware of technology trends and trends in government spending and priorities;
  • Provide guidance for division IRAD program and encourage strategic IRADs that will benefit the division;
  • Attend industry days, conferences, serve on technical working groups; Encourage publication within the division.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, engineering physics, or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, engineering physics, or related field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, engineering physics, or related field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Master’s degree in M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, engineering physics, or related field and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, engineering physics, or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • M.S. and 7+ years of experience or a Ph.D. and 4+ years of experience in AMO physics, quantum computing or sensing, or a related technical discipline;
  • Experience in leading research projects and managing researchers;
  • Successful development of external customers, proposal development, and sponsor awards.
  • A demonstrated understanding of the AMO physics underpinning QSD’s research and knowledge of the ultimate applicability of AMO technologies to the end applications;
  • An appreciation of related technical fields in which the division can grow.
