Position Purpose:

The Charge Nurse accepts the responsibility and accountability for the operations and staff for the entire unit during a designated shift and the evaluation and treatment of the populations. He/she is responsible for planning, directing, supervising, implementing and evaluating nursing care of patients. Reports to Critical Care Unit Director.

Responsible for Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Student Nurses, and Volunteers who may be working under his/her supervision during the scheduled shift. Ensures all assigned/delegated additional tasks are completed in a timely manner. Enforces unit and medical center policies.

Supervision:

  • Responsible for compliance with overall nursing practice standards of the specialty area (Reports to Department Director)
  • Responsible for compliance with standards during assigned shift (Reports to House Supervisor)
  • Uses established principles of delegation and supervision to direct the activities of all licensed and non-licensed care givers and support staff in the delivery of patient care during their assigned shift
  • Uses independent judgment to ensure optimal delivery of patient care and appropriate use of available resources
