POSITION PURPOSE

The Priest Chaplain primarily provides sacramental ministries of the Roman Catholic Church to Catholic patients, visitors, and staff as a member of the Pastoral Care Department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides assessment of spiritual needs and pastoral interventions primarily in connection with the sacramental ministries of the Roman Catholic Church, especially the Sacramental Anointing of the Sick and the Celebration of Mass.
  • Documents pastoral interventions provided following pastoral ministries with patients and visitors of patients. May document other ministries as directed.
  • Facilitates the appropriate involvement of and ministry to patient’s visitors in the course of pastoral ministry. Maintains an effective working relationship with parish priests, other clergy, and hospital chaplains.
  • May provide sacramental ministry to hospital staff as appropriate.
  • Celebrates the Roman Catholic mass for the Catholic Community in the hospital.
  • Participates in insuring 24-hour/seven day per week on call for emergency sacramental needs.
  • May provide consultation on spiritual and ethical matters to patients, visitors, and staff as needed. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patients, families, and staff.
  • Discusses patient and hospital information only as allowed per organizational policy.
  • Responsible for other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

  • Must be an ordained Roman Catholic priest with faculties granted by the Bishop of the Diocese of Lansing for sacramental, pastoral ministry, which is presumed to include at least a Master of Divinity or equivalent degree.
  • Board Certified Chaplain via the NACC or APC
  • Must possess acceptable interpersonal skills in order to interact effectively in ministry.
  • Must have the ability to provide ministry in the context of an ecumenical team ministry and maintain a flexible work schedule.
  • Must receive orientation and ongoing training sufficient to acquire and maintain familiarity with hospital and department policies and procedures.
