Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure track position as Chair of the Department of Restorative Sciences & Biomaterials, at the academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

Position Overview:

The Chair of the Department of Restorative Sciences & Biomaterials is responsible for overseeing the School's ADA-accredited Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics. The program includes both an ADA-accredited 36-month residency in Prosthodontics that combines residency training with an MSD degree in Prosthodontics and a 60-month program that combines residency training with a DScD in Prosthodontics. The Department also oversees Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Operative Dentistry and Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Digital Dentistry programs.


The Chair is responsible for collaborating with the Director of the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics, the Clinical Director of the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics and the Clinical Director of the Certificate programs of Advanced Graduate Study in Operative Dentistry and Digital Dentistry on all aspects of the didactic, clinical and research components of the Programs, including the selection and mentoring of its postgraduate residents, and the organization and oversight of the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics curriculum and recruitment, and the hiring and professional development of faculty and staff.

The Chair also collaborates with the Assistant Dean for Biomaterials & Biomaterials Research who directs the Department's biomaterials research mission and is responsible for the MSD and DScD aspects of the programs noted above as well as with other departments at the school and University.


The duties and responsibilities of a Department Chair are extensive and include:


  • Establishing a vision, strategy and business model with the appropriate operating infrastructure to ensure academic and clinical operations are effective, service oriented and efficient.
  • Providing leadership that promotes professional development of existing faculty members and attracts highly motivated and exceptional faculty, staff and trainees to the department. Ensuring the department is recruiting the best faculty and staff to meet its strategic goals.
  • Coaching, mentoring and developing others to build internal leadership capabilities for successful delivery of educational, clinical and research initiatives.
  • Fostering a culture of academic collaboration with affiliated departments and centers and expanding an infrastructure that promotes intellectual productivity.
  • Establishing appropriate communication with faculty, staff and administration that results in trust, alignment and collaborative working relationships in the pursuit of improved department cohesion and team environment.
  • Developing key institutional partnerships and strategic relationships and define and pursue interdisciplinary clinical and research goals that align with school and university strategic goals.
  • Creating, implementing and maintaining defined standard objectives for clinical operation, quality, treatment outcomes, patient access, financial targets and volume growth.
  • Overseeing departmental budgeting and resource management, meeting departmental financial goals, and enact policies and processes that promote fiscal accountability and responsibility.
  • As the educational leader of the department, ensuring an excellent teaching program for the residents who are receiving education and training within the department.
  • Identifying new and expand existing sources of funding, including extramural clinical and translational research grants, philanthropy and clinical revenue.
  • Assuring implementation of university policies pertaining to faculty governance, academic growth and promotion, evaluation and actively enhance and promote diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging.
  • Accountable for compliance with accreditation requirements, as well as compliance with university and school policies and procedures.


Required Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • DMD/DDS degree or equivalent.
  • Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Prosthodontics from a CODA accredited program or equivalent
  • In-depth understanding of the implementation and integration of the competency-based, comprehensive oral healthcare philosophy as it relates to Restorative Sciences & Biomaterials.
  • Strong background in emerging technologies serving oral and dental health practices.
  • At least 5 years of academic and significant leadership experience in an academic setting.
  • Eligible for dental licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

  • National/international reputation as a respected and accomplished researcher, clinician and educator who meets Boston University criteria for a mid-career faculty position.
  • Proven, substantial and progressive leadership achievement in an academic medical center.
  • Evidence of an astute understanding of academic clinical practice and a deep commitment to clinical excellence based on a patient-centered, comprehensive model of care.
  • Demonstrated understanding of finances in academic administration.
  • Evidence of success in developing a strong clinical program that recognizes and meets the needs of the various providers with whom the department works, those of the students that the department educates and trains, as well as those of the patients whom the department serves.
  • Record of success in mentoring and developing faculty, students and trainees, and supporting them in their academic, teaching, clinical and research endeavors.
  • Track record as a creative and strategic thinker who is able to envision and manage for the future.
  • Evidence of success in leading and developing excellent graduate medical education programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead teams, and to develop strong ties and connections with internal and external constituencies and individuals
  • Board certified or Board eligible in Prosthodontics
  • Possess MS, MSD, DScD or/and PhD degree in a relevant field

Salary is commensurate with experience and rank awarded.
