POSITION SUMMARY
The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) administers oral, inhalation, and topical medications to patients as prescribed by the provider and documents that administration, the medication effectiveness, and any noted adverse actions or side effects of the medications in accordance with the established Wexford policies and procedures, current standards of practice and care and applicable state/federal regulations.

JOB RELATIONS
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Direct clinical supervision from Director of Nursing or designee and administrative supervision from the Health Services Administrator.

RELATIONSHIPS
Interacts with all health care unit personnel, inmate patients, site administration staff, security staff, clinical providers, and regional team members as required.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Passes medications and gives treatments according to provider’s orders and in accordance with Wexford and facility policy/procedures.
2. Observes patients for drug reactions and reports any problems to the nurses. Monitor/obtain patient’s vital signs, calculate medication dosages and stock the medication cart.
3. Records medications administered in the medication administration record (MAR) chart.
4. Assists in the assessment of the physical, psychological and social dimensions of patients in the health care unit and, as necessary, in the housing units.
5. Assists in planning and implementing individual treatment programs in the health care unit and housing units by utilizing available resources and consulting with licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, PA/NP’s, physicians and correctional officers.
6. Implements medical plan through administering medications and intervention in accordance with physician instructions.
7. Documents nursing encounters, patient response, effectiveness, complications etc., and communicates information to supervisory personnel and physicians in accordance with physician’s orders.
8. Assists in maintaining working and living areas and supplies in good order.
9. Serves as a member of a nursing care and treatment team and assists provider as assigned.
10. Uses available in-house resource personnel and departments for treatment/consultation.
11. Implements clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
12. Takes and records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure).
13. Applies and changes dressings.
14. Provides for emotional and physical comfort and safety of patients.
15. Assists with activities of daily living with special attention to therapeutic significance.
16. Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized medication cart and medication room.
17. May be required to assist residents with personal hygiene tasks, and other activities of daily living.
18. May be required to develop and maintain accurate accounting of all resident personal property for assigned unit. Identify property and keep inventory sheet current.
19. May be required to perform duties as set forth on Certified Nurse Aide job description as needed.
20. Monitors personal and staff compliance to all State and federal requirements including but not limited to blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, infection control, and fire safety.
21. Monitors personal and staff compliance to resident’s rights.
22. Handles soiled linens and clothing and cleans patient areas: blood, urine, feces, vomitus, wound exudate, semen/vaginal secretions, other body fluids - cerebrospinal, synovial, pleural, peritoneal, pericardial, amniotic.

Must be able to ambulate throughout the facility for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to clearly communicate orally and via written and typed correspondence and notes using various forms, records, charts, and electronic media.
This position may require rotating assignments operating on a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week schedule where employee is subject to both voluntary and mandatory overtime.
Employee may be exposed to a challenging environment, which may include exposure to loud noises, bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Standard medical setting in a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with inmates, correctional staff, and health care personnel.
Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.

CERTIFICATION
Current Indiana CMA certification. Acceptable standing with the Nurse Aide Registry as applicable. Current CPR Certification.

EDUCATION
High School Diploma or GED. Completion of an Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH)-approved training program or other qualifying healthcare training.

Currently listed on the Indiana State Department of Health Nurse Aide Registry
