Position Purpose

The Health Director, under the supervision of the Camp Director and under the standing orders and technical direction of a licensed physician in the nearby community, is responsible for overseeing and promoting the general health, safety, and sanitation of the campers, staff, and entire camp. The Health Director is responsible for making decisions based upon established medical protocol and supervisory review. Camp Lakota is a Girl Scout overnight camp that serve girls in grades 2-12. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

GSGLA Camp Lakota

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6, 272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Provide health care to meet individual needs of camp staff and campers.

• Lead daily medication management.
• Supervise and provide care for both staff and campers seeking medical attention.
• Provide CPR and First Aid coverage as needed at designated times and locations.
• Provide direct care to staff within the scope of their skills, the camp’s health care manual, and treatment plan.
• Collaborate with other medical staff as necessary to ensure medical needs are met.

2. Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.

• Set up the camp Health Center.
• Inventory, order, and maintain stock of all necessary medical supplies and equipment.

3. Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state, American Camp Association, and GSGLA standards.

• Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file.
• Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
• Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms.

4. Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.

• Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including camp vehicles, kitchen, offices, waterfront, activity areas, out-of-camp trips.
• Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.

5. Ensure a staff orientation session is delivered on medical services.

• Ensure camp staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid.
• Provide or ensure orientation is provided that includes standing orders, clinic hours, specific camper health and social needs, health center procedures, emergency procedures, growth and development of age groups, staff health assessment of campers, policies on contacting parents, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting.

6. Screen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing camp.

• Verify health history and examination.
• Verify emergency authorization.
• Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.
• Conduct a health assessment.
• Keep all medications used by campers and staff.

7. Supervise sanitary conditions throughout camp.

• Report daily and observe cleanliness in the food service facility and other areas throughout camp.
• Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.

8. Act as a member of the camp administrative team (Camp Director, Health Director, Activity Director) within activities and throughout the camp day.

• Address staff and campers concerns in a timely manner; effectively communicate changes and concerns with the Camp Director.
• Assist in the planning and implementation of staff trainings.
• Serve as a role model through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
• Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special programs, sleep outs, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.

Relationships:
The Health Director has specific relationships with other health care staff which may include volunteer/staff physicians, on-call nurses, or other designated medical staff. They may work with the Food Service Director to ensure sanitation is upheld in the kitchen and food service areas. Additionally, the Health Director will work with camp staff to ensure camp cleanliness and sanitation. They regularly communicate with campers and staff regarding health issues, concerns, and general well-being.

Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience)*

Registered nurse (RN), physician, or EMT with a license as required by state law.

• Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care.
• Must be 21 years of age or older.
• Ability to drive, possession of a valid driver’s license, and clean DMV record.
• Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
• Ability to pass a background check.
• Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend pre-camp trainings.

Physical Requirements*

Communicates and works with all ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.

• Observes camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
• Needs to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
• Constantly responds appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
• Frequently moves luggage, tables, chairs, and program equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Needs to traverse and move several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
• Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
• Needs to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation.
• Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and work flexible hours.
• Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
