Brown University Inspiring Minds Volunteer Engagement VISTA Details

AmeriCorps - Rhode Island

Employment Type : Full-Time

The Brown University AmeriCorps VISTA Fellowship is a full-time, post-graduate service opportunity hosted through the Swearer Center at Brown University. Founded by Brown University President, Howard R. Swearer, The Swearer Center for Public Service is a community of scholars, students, practitioners, and community members that work together to build on community strengths and address community challenges. Through the creative capacities of our students, faculty, and community partners we explore, build, and implement collaborative and strategic projects, programs, and initiatives. Our work yields transformative learning and positive sustainable change through collective action. VISTA fellows apply for a VISTA position at a local partner organization, state agency, or Swearer Center department to build capacity in organizations fighting poverty. These agencies work in the education, health, arts and/or economic justice sector. Current VISTA fellow placement sites include: Beat the Streets New England, Breakthrough Providence, House of Hope Community Development Corporation, Inspiring Minds, Providence After School Alliance, Social Enterprise Greenhouse, and Youth In Action. Inspiring Minds aims to ensure Providence’s youngest learners receive the education, social, and emotional support they need to be successful in and out of the classroom. The VISTA member will build systems to maximize Inspiring Mind’s volunteer engagement and retention. The VISTA will also help the organization ensure a strong, engaged, connected, and resilient community support for our youngest learners with an emphasis on supporting learners enrolled in urban core schools where rates of poverty are high. The VISTA will develop and implement systems for community volunteer recruitment and management in order to demonstrably enhance critical elements in student achievement by delivering increasingly high-quality programs.
