EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
High School Diploma or Equivalent
College work with a minimum of 2.5 GPA Strong Mathematics, Science and/or English background, preferred

OTHER INFORMATION : Work Type: Part-time (6-19 hours per week). Applicants must agree to a criminal history check prior to beginning work.

High School Diplomas and college/university degrees must be obtained from an accredited program or university approved by the United States Department of Education and the Texas Education agency.
PRIMARY PURPOSE SUMMARY :
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a system that targets potential college students who require support. AVID prepares these students by teaching them college readiness skills. Students are enrolled in advanced courses and given academic support through tutors.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Works with small groups of middle school and/or high school students.
2. Determines from student notes and discussions, the concepts that require teaching or review.
3. Evaluates student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, etc.
4. Becomes familiar with the materials in the AVID Curriculum Libraries.
5. Becomes familiar with the textbooks and materials used by AVID students.
6. Conducts tutorial sessions in all content areas including Mathematics, Science, Social Students, Reading and Writing.
7. Sets an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
8. Communicates frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
9. Tutors will be trained in the Socratic tutorial method and will receive ongoing feedback and assistance with implementing AVID resources.

  • Interest in scaffolding student learning using questioning and collaboration techniques
  • Highly organized with attention to detail
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to communicate constructively and effectively
  • Ability to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with students and staff
